It is one of the five airports in Sicily with civil purposes, but is also used for military issues (namely the base is used as one of the four Forward Operating Bases [FOBs] used by the NATO AWACS stationed out of Geilenkirchen Germany]). The airport is named after Sicilian wine industralist and automobile enthusiast Vincenzo Florio.

Located 13 km south west of Trapani, and inaugurated in the early 1960s, after a long period of inactivity the airport was relaunched by the Province of Trapani in 2003, and now it hosts several flights, included new low-cost connections.

With 507.185 passengers went through the airport in 2007, it is the third airport of Sicily for relevance.
