Transnistrian Declaration of Independence
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
By signing its Declaration of Independence on September 2, 1990, Transnistria withdrew from the Moldavian SSR, a republic inside the Soviet Union. The declaration came after a referendum. Referendum was organized by promoters of secession from Moldova and the correctness of results is debatable. Neither Moldovan Soviet authorities or Moscow authorities recognized the results of the referendum.
As is the norm with unilateral declarations of independence, the authorities of the metropolitan state declared this declaration to be without legal force. This subsequently gave rise to the disputed status of Transnistria.
