The South Central Railway operates various trains between different stations providing a well-developed and interconnected railway route and is considered a crucial zone connecting trains originating from East, West and North of India destined to Southern India. The South Central Railway zone, which has its head-quarters at Secunderabad, covers majority of Andhra Pradesh state leaving aside Waltair Division of East Coast Railway operating North Coastal Andhra region. SCR also covers small sections in the states of Karnataka, Maharashtra and Tamilnadu.

Each railway route in India has its own distinctive name, usually evocative of the places it connects or passes through. Usually, these names are taken from those of landmarks, landforms, rivers, famous people, or the important temples and shrines that lie along the route. Some important railway routes managed by the SCR are:
- 2728/2727 Godavari Express between Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam is named after the South Indian River Godavari.
- 7405/7406 Krishna Express between Nizamabad and Tirupati is named after the South Indian River Krishna.
- 7487/7488 Tirumala Express between Visakhapatnam and Tirupati is named after Tirumala, abode of Lord Venkateshwara.
- 7209/7406 Sheshadri Express between Kakinada and Bangalore is named after the the Sacred Hill Range Sheshachalam in Tirupati.
- 7607/7608 Tungabhadra Express between Secunderabad and Kurnool is named after the South Indian River Tungabhadra.
- 2733/2734 Narayanadri Express between Secunderabad and Tirupati is named Lord Venkateshwara of Tirumala Tirupati.
- 2709/2710 Simhapuri Express between Secunderabad and Gudur is named after the historical name of Nellore Town.
- '7035/7036 Telangana Express between Secunderabad and Sirpur Khagaznagar is named after the Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh.
- 7233/7234 Bhagyanagar Express between Secunderabad and Sirpur Khagaznagar is named after the ancient name of Hyderabad City.
- 2763/2764 Padmavati Express between Secunderabad and Tirupati is named after the Goddess Padmavati, whose temple stands in Tirupati.
- 7239/7240 Simhadri Express between Guntur and Visakhapatnam is named after Simhachalam in Visakhapatnam, the abode of Lord Lakshmi Narasimha.
- 2747/2748 Palnadu Express between Guntur and Vikarabad is named after the region of Pallava Nadu in Guntur District.
- 2797/2798 Venkatadri Express between Kacheguda and Chittor after the Venkatachalam Hill range located at Tirupati
- 7429/7430 Rayalaseema Express between Hyderabad and Tirupati is named after the Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh.
- 2713/2714 Sathavahana Express between Secunderabad and Vijayawada after the Sathavahana kingdom in Andhra.
- 2737/2738 Gautami Express between Secunderabad and Kakinada after the river Gautami, a tributary to Godavari River.
- 2711/2712 Pinakini Express between Vijayawada and Chennai is named after the mythical name of the South Indian river Pennar.
- 2717/2718 Ratnachal Express between Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam is named after the Ratnachalam Hills in Andhra Pradesh.
- 2701/2702 Hussainsagar Express between Hyderabad and Mumbai CSTM is named after the famous lake in Hyderabad.
- 2721/2722 Dakshin Express between Hyderabad and Hazrat Nizamuddin is named indicating South India.
- 2723/2724 Andhra Pradesh Express between Hyderabad and New Delhi is named after the state of Andhra Pradesh.
- 2760/2759 Charminar Express between Hyderabad and Chennai is named after Charminar, a historical monument in Hyderabad.
- 7015/7016 Visakha Express between Secunderabad and Bhubaneshwar is named after the popular buddhist follower Visakha who resided in Vishakapatnam
- 7415/7416 Haripriya Express between Tirupati and Kolhapur via Guntakal, Hubli, Belgaum and Miraj.
- 7225/7226 Amaravati Express tri-weekly between Vijayawada and Hubli named after Amaravathi Town, the capital city of Satavahanas, the first great Andhra kings and also an excavation site of an ancient Buddhist Stupa.
- 7201/7202 Golconda express between Secunderabad and Guntur is named after the famous Golconda Fort situated in Hyderabad
- 2703/2704 Falaknuma Express between Secunderabad and Howrah named after the Falaknuma Palace in Hyderabad
- 7229/7230 Sabari Express between Hyderabad and Trivandrum( via Coimbatore)is a pilgrim centre in Kerala, abode of Lord Ayyappa.
- 7058/7057 Devagiri Express between Secunderabad and Mumbai CSTM via Nizamabad named after Devagiri town known as Daulatabad Fort nearby Aurangabad.
- 7063/7064 Ajanta Express between Secunderabad and Manmad after the famous Ajanta Caves in Maharashtra connecting Shirdi via, Nizamabad and Nanded.
- 7617/7618 Tapovan Express between Nanded and Mumbai CSTM named after Tapovan Vatika on the banks of river Godavari in Nasik.
- 2715/2716 Sachkhand Express between Nanded and Amritsar named after the holy Sikh Shrine in Nanded.
- 7687/7688 Marathwada Express between Dharmabad and Manmad named after the Marathwada region of Maharashtra.
- 2071/2072 Janshatabdi Express between Aurangabad and Lokmanya Tilak via Manmad.
- 2707/2708 Andhra Pradesh Sampark Kranti Express tri-weekly between Tirupati and Hazrat Nizamuddin via Kadapa, Kurnool, Mahaboobnagar and Secunderabad.
- 2735/2736 Garib Rath Express tri-weekly between Secunderabad and Yesvantpur via Raichur and Guntakal.
- 2705/2706 Inter City Express between Secunderabad and Guntur via Vijayawada.
