A train simulator is a computer based video game that simulates rail transport operations. Aspects covered may include:

  • Driving the train. Starting up, setting speeds, stopping, and selecting routes, unless using a pre-programed train and route.
  • Internal views from the driver's cab as part of driving the train
  • External views of a train, from different angles or from stationary points
  • Operating a pre-assembled train consist (the term used for the collection of train vehicles that make up a full train)
  • Managing signals for routing trains
  • Economic simulations of railway companies
  • For advanced users, creating train consists, routes, stations, signals, scenery and so forth.
