Extracurricular programs

Trabuco Hills High School houses a significant number of extracurricular programs, many of which have received official recognition at the state and national level.

Instrumental Music

Trabuco Hills houses one of the most accomplished high school music programs in the state of California. Its drumline, colorguard, and marching band have performed in various regional and state competitions. The Trabuco Hills Percussion Ensemble earned 7th in the world for the Percussion Scholastic Open Division. The Trabuco Hills Winter Guard has recently closed an almost undefeated year with the exception of 15th place in the world for the Scholastic A division and 2nd in the state in the same division. The colorguard and drumline perform alongside the marching band in the fall semester, a unit which has also accomplished many great things. Just two years ago, the Thundering Marching Mustang Unit took 1st place in the entire state for the 4A division. This upcoming year, the unit plans to return to the Fiesta Bowl, a competition and parade held in Arizona. You must be invited to perform in the competition. The organization only invites the top marching bands in the nation to attend to competition and parade. The Trabuco Hills Jazz Ensemble recently took first in the Intermediate Division at the Irvine High School jazz festival. The jazz program also includes a seven-piece jazz combo which performs and competes both alongside and independent of the Jazz Ensemble. The school's Symphonic Orchestra has performed at a national festival in Orlando Florida, and set an all time record for highest score achieved at that festival. On the heels of that tremendous accomplishment, it recently turned down an invitation to perform in Carnegie Hall. In the year 2006, the Symphonic Orchestra attended the inauguaral of the Orchestra of America Fesitval in Indianapolis. The current director of the music program is Dr. Howard Stephens and the assistant director of music is Mr. Russell Moreau.

Model United Nations

Trabuco Hills boasts a broad and successful Model United Nations program. Model UN is currently incorporated into the social science curriculum as an optional component in the freshman cultural geography course and the sophomore world history course. A junior-senior level international studies and comparative government course was discontinued in 2004.

Delegates representing THHS MUN have attended numerous conferences, including UC Berkeley, UC Irvine and El Toro High School. Minor conferences that are used primarily for training of freshman delegates include Mission Viejo High School and Laguna Hills High School. THHS delegates have garnered numerous performance and research awards, both personal and delegation, at these conferences.

Academic Decathlon

The Academic Decathlon is a class at Trabuco Hills High School, but it also serves as an extracurricular program. Generally nine students compete among other teams in Orange County, and if successful among teams statewide, in ten academic events including a speech and an interview. The Trabuco Hills team now accommodates more than nine students allowing it to have several teams. The team has made it to the state competition several years including 2005. The team also has freshman and sophomore teams; however at that level the competition is much less rigorous and challenging.

Science Olympiad

The Trabuco Hills Science Olympiad club was founded in 2006. There are fifteen members on the team, and each member competes in at least two rigorous science competitions ranging from studying insects to building bridges. In the overall Orange County competition it ranked fourteenth (against schools such as Troy High School, whose team has repeatedly ranked first in the national competition), while ranking third in the Science Bowl competition.
