[edit] Origin of Travelling Gnome
I believe the origin could be from a short story called "Wish You Were Here" by Frank Jones in a book "Fingerprints: A Collection of Stories by the Crime Writers of Canada"
It was apparently published in 1984. I read it in a High School english class 10 or 12 years ago.

I'm proposing merging Gnoming, Travelling Gnome and Travelling gnome prank as they all appear to be variations of the same thing (despite claims to the contrary). The three article also appear to rely on a lot of original research, or even made up stuff.
