- 1866 – Matthias W. Baldwin, American steam locomotive manufacturer and founder of Baldwin Locomotive Works, dies (b. 1795).
- 1895 – The Jacksonville, St. Augustine and Indian River Railway Company changes its name to Florida East Coast Railway (map pictured).
- 1949 – Deutsche Bundesbahn in Germany is formed as a successor of the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft.
