- 1861 – Oliver Robert Hawke Bury, Chief mechanical engineer and manager of Great Western Railway of Brazil 1892–1894, general manager of the Great Northern Railway in England 1902–1912, Director of the London and North Eastern Railway 1912–1945, is born (d. 1946).
- 1863 – Theodore Judah (pictured), American engineer who argued the case for construction of the First Transcontinental Railroad, dies (b. 1826).
- 1969 – Kansas City Southern's Southern Belle passenger train service between Kansas City, Missouri, and New Orleans, Louisiana, makes its final run.
- 1984 – The Iowa Interstate Railroad is created using the former Rock Island Railroad mainline from Chicago, Illinois, to Omaha, Nebraska.
