- 1824 – James Mitchell Ashley, founder and president of Ann Arbor Railroad, is born (d. 1896).
- 1832 – Charles Carroll of Carrollton (pictured), signer of the Declaration of Independence and a co-founder of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, dies (b. 1737).
- 1960 – A steam locomotive-hauled passenger train incorrectly departs from a station and runs into a diesel locomotive-powered freight train in northeastern Bohemia, Czechoslovakia. See: Stéblová train disaster.
