- 1821 – William Henry Vanderbilt, son of Cornelius Vanderbilt and president of the New York Central system, is born.
- 1842 – A passenger train traveling between Paris and Versailles derails near Moudon and catches fire, killing 55 people.
- 1915 – Schwyzer Strassenbahnen (SStB) opens connecting Ibach, Baden-Württemberg, and Brunnen Schifflände, Switzerland.
- 1926 – A. Philip Randolph (pictured) organizes the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters.
