- 1835 – The first railway in continental Europe, linking Brussels and Mechelen, Belgium, opens.
- 1836 – The Albany and West Stockbridge Railroad is chartered as the successor to the Castleton and West Stockbridge Railroad in Massachusetts and eastern New York.
- 1851 – Philip Hone (pictured), first president of Delaware and Hudson Railway 1825-1826, dies (b. 1780).
- 1875 – The Boston, Revere Beach and Lynn Railroad is chartered in Massachusetts.
