- 1862 – The Pacific Railroad Act authorizing the construction of the First Transcontinental Railroad in North America is signed into law by President Abraham Lincoln.
- 1902 – Oliver Robert Hawke Bury becomes General Manager of the Great Northern Railway in England.
- 1968 – The Chicago Great Western Railway is merged into the Chicago and North Western Railway to avoid bankruptcy.
- 2005 – Indian Railways inaugurates two new Shatabdi Express passenger trains (pictured), one between Chennai and Bangalore and a new Jan-Shatabdi Express between Madgaon and Mangalore.
