• 1853 – The Mississippi and Missouri Railroad, a predecessor of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad, is established in Iowa to build a railroad between Davenport and Council Bluffs.^[1]
• 1878 – The first train is operated on the Seattle and Walla Walla Railroad from Renton to Newcastle.^[2]
• 1950 – The first diesel locomotive to pull a freight train on the San Diego and Arizona Railway begins its journey from El Centro, California, on a trial run.^[3]
