- 1804 – Richard Trevithick's first railway steam locomotive operates for the first time.
- 1935 – Jean Pelletier, Chairman of VIA Rail 2001-2004, is born.
- 1981 – MBTA discontinues passenger train service to Rhode Island.
- 1985 – The Soo Line acquires the Milwaukee Road and attempts to operate it as a subsidiary railroad.
