- 1854 – Whitmell P. Tunstall (pictured), first president of the Richmond and Danville Railroad, dies (b. 1810)
- 1862 – The Brooklyn, Bath and Coney Island Rail Road, a predecessor of the Long Island Rail Road and the first steam locomotive-powered railroad to reach Coney Island, is incorporated.
- 1983 – Pere Marquette 1225 is moved from the campus of Michigan State University to the former Ann Arbor Railroad shops at Owosso, Michigan, to begin its restoration to operating condition.
