- 1795 – Matthias W. Baldwin, American steam locomotive manufacturer and founder of Baldwin Locomotive Works, is born (d. 1866).
- 1908 – The Grand Trunk Pacific Railroad's 2,775 ft (846 m) long Battle River bridge, standing 195 ft (60 m) above the river, is completed.[1]
- 1923 – Thomas George Shaughnessy, president of Canadian Pacific Railway Limited 1899-1918, dies (b. 1853).
- 1998 – The Surface Transportation Board gives preliminary approval to Dakota, Minnesota and Eastern Railroad's application to build into the Powder River Basin (map pictured), pending completion of an Environmental Impact Statement.
