- 1848 – George Stephenson (pictured), English steam locomotive builder, dies (b. 1781).
- 1872 – The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad, building westward from Newton, Kansas, reaches Larned.
- 1888 – Santa Fe Railroad subsidiary companies complete construction of the final link in what has come to be known as the Surf Line connecting Los Angeles and San Diego.[1]
- 2005 – E. Spencer Miller, president of Maine Central Railroad 1952-1978, dies.
