- 1853 – The New York Central railroad is formed through the merger of ten smaller railroads in the New York area.
- 1914 – Construction begins on the Connaught Tunnel in the Selkirk Mountains under Rogers Pass on the Canadian Pacific Railway main line between Calgary, Alberta, and Revelstoke, British Columbia.
