- 1834 – Chauncey Depew (pictured), president of New York Central Railroad, is born (d. 1928).
- 1858 – Leonor F. Loree, president of Baltimore and Ohio Railroad 1901-1903, Delaware and Hudson Railway 1907-1938 and Kansas City Southern Railway 1918-1920, is born (d. 1940).
- 1860 – The Staten Island Railway starts operations in Staten Island, New York; this is now the oldest rapid transit right-of-way in New York City, but it is operated separately from the New York City Subway.
- 2005 – Los Angeles Metrolink opens a new station in Palmdale on the system's Antelope Valley line.
