[edit] Summary
Members of the Roosevelt Scientific Expedition up the River of Doubt in 1913. Theodore Roosevelt was inspired by his friend, Father John Augustine Zahm's stories of his jungle adventures in South American jungles. TR got scientific support and accepted as leader, the famous Brazilian explorer Colonel Candido Mariano da Silva Rondon. This expedition, however, nearly cost TR his life and shortened his life by probably 10 years per himself and his sister, Corrine, so weakened was TR from the commulative effects of malaria and a serious infection. The expedition ran October 4, 1913 through May 19, 1914. In this photo, Fr. Zahm is 3rd from left, then TR and TR's son Kermit.
