The Toyota Starlet GT Turbo was based on the 80 series of the Toyota Starlet, and was first introduced in 1990 as a successor to the 70 series' Turbo R. It was powered by a turbocharged version of a Toyota's E Engine, the 4E-FTE, and boasted power figures of 135 bhp (101 kW) @ 6400 rpm which, for the extremely light Starlet, was enough to propell the car from 0-100 km/h in under 7 seconds. At the time, acceleration times like that were only found in expensive coupe's and large cars and thus its' "affordable power" created an instant market for the car.

As other JDM Starlets, the GT Turbo got minor change in January 1992 with new bumpers, and rear combination lamps. The second minor change was given in May 1994, this time with 4 round quad headlights combined with the mesh grille. The tail lights remained the same, but the full length center garnish was replaced by the small ones on each side.

Production of the car ended in December 1995, but the popularity of the car is still maintained by a cult of drivers, mainly as a used import.

2 Limited edition versions of the GT turbo were produced; the GT Limited and the GT Advance. both featured small changes such as different steering wheels and gear shifter knobs, a rear strut bar, ABS (later versions only) and were distinguishable by their "2 tone" paint scheme. These models also featured an optional LSD which was available with the C153 transaxle.

As the GT Turbo became available as a used import it spawned a cult of drivers in right hand drive countries such as UK, Malta, Barbados, Jamaica and Ireland. It became typically popular of young male drivers as it was, in most countries, cheap to obtain road tax, insurance and cheap to run, providing a lot of "bang per buck." The performance of the car can also easily be increased by a host of modifications readily available, from cheap, "sporty" induction kits to all out car rebuilds with massively powerful engines. Some owners have achieved more than double the engine's stock specific power output![1] The popularity of the car is now maintained by clubs that have been set up by enthusiasts and their forums on the web.
