Tower Hill School is a small, private, preparatory school located at 2813 West 17th Street in Wilmington, Delaware, offering instruction for pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. The school was founded in 1919 and was originally committed to progressive education methods. It has a strong academic reputation and college placement record; particularly strong are the English and Art departments, while those relating to History, Science, and Mathematics tend to be slightly less emphasized[citation needed].
The school competes in the Independent Conference for interscholastic sports. The boys lacrosse and soccer, girls field hockey, track, tennis and lacrosse teams are considered strong, often winning state titles, including girls lacrosse in 2007.
The school motto is Multa bene facta, "Many things done well".
Famous alumni include former Duke basketball player Carmen Wallace, U.S. Congressman Michael N. Castle, Orlando Magic Senior Vice President Pat Williams, Dr. Mehmet Oz, and Governor Pete DuPont.
Every Spring, near the end of the school year, Tower Hill students from Grades 1-8 participate in "Field Day", a competition between the Green team and the White team. Students are placed onto these teams when arriving at Tower Hill, and compete for the same team each year. Events include the hula hoop race, stilts walk, Carry The Colors relay race, and the Tower Tug (Tug o' War). In addition to the standard events including all students, each grade level has a "dash"— a foot race for which students must qualify; the top three finishers earn points for their teams.
In December 2007, the Wall Street Journal ranked Tower Hill 24th in the nation and first in Delaware in percentage of students attending eight top colleges. In 2007 Tower Hill sent 12.1% of its graduating class to Harvard, Princeton, MIT, Williams, Pomona, Swarthmore, the University of Chicago, or Johns Hopkins. [1]
The school's high tuition tops every other private day school in the state, tending to skew the school's socio-economic representation to the high to very high minority. Despite efforts of the school to increase diversity, total financial aid peaks at only $1,239,100[citation needed]; about $1,550 per student to cover a $22,500 tuition bill. The school is comprised of 40% "legacies", or students with at least one family member having previously attended the school.
