Towanda is a city in Butler County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,338 at the 2000 census.

Towanda is located at 37°47′45″N, 96°59′58″W (37.795921, -96.999380)[3], along the Whitewater River.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.9 km²), all of it land.

Towanda is the athletic rival of the El Dorado High School.

Circle High School, located in Towanda, has one of the top graphic arts departments in the state. They are the top computer art school recognized at the Scholastics Art and Writing Awards, since 2005.

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 1,338 people, 492 households, and 383 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,804.8 people per square mile (698.1/km²). There were 537 housing units at an average density of 724.3/sq mi (280.2/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 96.79% White, 0.37% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.22% from other races, and 2.02% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.75% of the population.

There were 492 households out of which 39.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.1% were married couples living together, 8.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.0% were non-families. 20.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.72 and the average family size was 3.14.

In the city the population was spread out with 29.3% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 29.0% from 25 to 44, 20.5% from 45 to 64, and 12.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 96.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $41,875, and the median income for a family was $47,188. Males had a median income of $32,250 versus $24,167 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,815. About 5.1% of families and 6.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 9.0% of those under age 18 and 5.0% of those age 65 or over.

Towanda is well known for being a small town in Butler, County. During the summer Towanda opens its pool, serving swimmers of all ages. Businesses in town include restaurants Gambino's Pizza, Rose Room Cafe, and The Rusty Bucket.

Towanda is also home to Michelle Walthers, 2006 Miss Kansas. She attended Circle High School in Towanda and a small video featuring Towanda will be shown at the Miss America Pagent.
