Alien Breed: Tower Assault (sometimes ABTA) is the third game in the Alien Breed franchise, a series of Science Fiction-themed top-down shooters largely inspired by the Alien films. It was released in 1994 by Team17 for the Amiga, PC and CD32, and is the last 2D game in the series.

[edit] Story

A Deep Space Barracks receive a distress signal from a Science Facility on an otherwise uninhabited planet. With no idea what to expect, a small troop of soldiers are sent in individual X-Wing style ships to search the planet, search for survivors and neutralise any threat.

Once the ships enter the range of the security system for the Facility, however, mounted lasers begin firing at the ships, picking them off one by one. In the end, there are only two survivors - Nash and Jordan - who crash-land in the outer perimeter of the Facility...

[edit] Gameplay

The game engine used is an improved version of the engine used in Alien Breed II: The Horror Continues, with various changes such as allowing maps to have multiple exits. This is an important change, as ABTA is much less linear than its predecessors - the blurb on the back of the box boasts more than 276 possible ways of completing the game. This alienated some players, who felt that with no fixed route the game became far too difficult. Other players enjoyed the freedom of this game, and rate it as one of the best games in the series.

Other improvements include Retreat Mode, which allows the player to shoot their weapon and walk backwards at the same time, although at a slightly slower speed.

[edit] Format variations

There are significant differences between the versions of the game released across different formats.

[edit] Amiga version

The Amiga version contains the full game spread across 3 3.5" floppy disks in original protected form (Disks are RobNorthen PDOS protected, each disks using longtracks + 980kb per disk) while the cracked version in amigaDOS disk standard is crammed on 4 disks.

[edit] CD32 version

The version of the game released for the Amiga CD32 contained the entire game, preceded by a lengthy FMV intro sequence which sets the scene and mood of the game. This was considered unusual for its time. In addition to which, the CD also contains the full AGA version of Alien Breed II: The Horror Continues.

[edit] PC version

There were two versions of Tower Assault for the PC, a floppy version and a CD-ROM version. Both were ported by East Point Software.

The floppy version is widely considered to be the worst version of the game. It does not include a large number of the levels, and does not feature the non-linear gameplay of the original. Instead, the game takes you through a fixed set of some of the levels in the game. The game is so restricted and reduced from the Amiga/CD32 versions that it is considered by some to be little more than a Tech Demo.

The CD-ROM version however retained the non-linear level structure of the original, as well as the FMV intro and outro sequences from the AmigaCD32 version. Alien Breed II is not included, though, despite what the text on the back of the packaging states.
