User talk:Toreau
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hello Toreau, welcome to Wikipedia. I noticed your comment at Iron Maiden - feel free to add their real names to the article too. Be bold in updating pages!
I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian. You can learn more on the how to edit page. The naming conventions and style guide pages are also useful. There is a sandbox which you can use to experiment in.
If you have any questions, see the help pages or add a question to the village pump. If you ever think a page or image should be deleted, please list it at the votes for deletion page. There is also a votes for undeletion page if you want to retrieve something that you think should not have been deleted. Angela 23:50, 22 Aug 2003 (UTC)
I see that picture you uploaded of Bruce Dickinson has previously appeared in the Telegraph. Do you know what the copyright status of it is? In case you didn't know, images used have to be able to be used under the terms of the GFDL. See Wikipedia:Copyrights for more info. Angela
Actually, I just did a search for "Bruce Dickinson" on http://images.google.com/ and thought that this picture looked good. How in God's name am I supposed to know the copyright of every picture on the web? :-)
- Wikipedia:Public domain image resources contains a list of websites where you can get images that are in the public domain. This means you will be able to use them on Wikipedia, although you should still state where you got the image from when you upload it. Unfortunately, we can not use any pictures if someone else owns the copyright and they have not released it under the terms of our licence. Good work on the formatting of the Iron Maiden page by the way. Angela
Thanks. I guess I won't be able to find any pictures in those archives listed, so my question is: What about pictures made available from their web site? Aren't pictures like that supposed to be used by anyone?
- Well, their website has ©1998-2003 IronMaiden.com Ltd. at the bottom of it, so probably not but I'm not a lawyer. You might get a better answer if you ask at the village pump. Angela
-
- You can always email them to get permission. See wikipedia:boilerplate request for permission. Martin 17:37, 24 Aug 2003 (UTC)
In my opinion, a FAQ wouldn't be suitable for Wikipedia in the format of a FAQ. However, you could try to refactor it into prose to match the style of an encyclopedia article. You might want to ask at the Wikipedia:Village pump for other opinions on this. Angela. 12:24, 13 Jul 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Nightwish
- Hi Toreau, I see you reverted my disambiguation of "The Carpenter". The reason I did this was to avoid the article appearing on a list of possible pluralisation problems, becuase the report thinks that what might have been meant was "The Carpenters". I'm not going to push this any further, however. --gadfium 21:16, 17 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- I see that as a problem with "the report that thinks ...", and not the article. There will also be written an article about this single, but I don't know when (and I don't know by who, either). --Toreau 06:46, Nov 18, 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Genealogy
Hello. I noticed you added some types of genealogy software to the page - great! I am not sure what is meant by web-based. I currently use Family Tree Legends which is used along with GenCircles. Would that qualify as web-based? Maybe you might add a definition for web-based?
- No, because it's a pure web site, as far as I can see. Web-based software is software - or applications - which works purely on web technology, ie. uses the web browser as an interface to the functionality of the software. Hope this helps...? --Toreau 05:10, Nov 27, 2004 (UTC)
Thanks for you help, I am new at this. I just took another quick look at one of the web-based sites on the list, phpmyfamily, and I think I get it.
Even though I have real-time updating on the GenCircles website, when I update my Family Tree Legends program at home, the data still has to go through a third party of some sort at GenCircles, to be viewable on the website.
With web-based, your are just using some type of html editor or notepad, uploading your file to the server and then the site is updated? Is this correct? The software that is offered on the phpmyfamiy site is just an text editor of some sort?
I like GenCircles very much...but now I am curious about the web-based site - it would be nice to be able to have a place to share information online.

[edit] Article Licensing
Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 2000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:
- Multi-Licensing FAQ - Lots of questions answered
- Multi-Licensing Guide
- Free the Rambot Articles Project
To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:
- Option 1
- I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
- DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual
OR
- Option 2
- I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
- DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual
Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk)
[edit] Image copyright status
Hi. If you are asserting that Image:Evergrey band.jpg is fair use, please give a link to the source where you found it on that image's description page. Thanks a lot. User:Rdsmith4/sig 00:39, 19 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- Hi
- How have you found an image from Eddie which is in the public domain? Image:Eddie the Head.jpg is a recent drawing, and the character should be copyrighted. Where did you take it from, and how do you know it's PD? Ta --Erri4a 22:43, 18 May 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Image:Nightwish Wishmaster.jpg
I noticed that you uploaded this picture and slapped a PD-tag on it. Please note that albumcover is the correct license to use for an albumcover, such as Wishmaster by Nightwish. Spinefarm did not release the cover into the public domain, and there are hardly any recordlabels that do so. We can only use these pictures through the fair-use claim, so please use the correct tag in the future ;) -- SoothingR(pour) 14:21, 10 November 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Request for edit summary
Hi. I am a bot, and I am writing to you with a request. I would like to ask you, if possible, to use edit summaries a bit more often when you contribute. The reason an edit summary is important is because it allows your fellow contributors to understand what you changed; you can think of it as the "Subject:" line in an email. For your information, your current edit summary usage is 37% for major edits and 66% for minor edits. (Based on the last 150 major and 150 minor edits in the article namespace.)
This is just a suggestion, and I hope that I did not appear impolite. You do not need to reply to this message, but if you would like to give me feedback, you can do so at the feedback page. Thank you, and happy edits, Mathbot 08:01, 27 February 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Image copyright problem with Image:Iron_Maiden_-_Live_After_Death.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Iron_Maiden_-_Live_After_Death.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. [edit] Image Tagging Image:Cristina Scabbia.jpg
|
Thanks for uploading Image:Cristina Scabbia.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then there needs to be an argument why we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then it needs to be specified where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the GFDL-self tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, consider reading fair use, and then use a tag such as article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other media, consider checking that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. 82.83.98.101 11:10, 4 May 2006 (UTC)

If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided source information for them as well.

[edit] Notability of Powerslave
Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Powerslave, by 156.34.221.221 (talk · contribs), another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Powerslave seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.
To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Powerslave, please affix the template hangon to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. --Android Mouse Bot 2 21:54, 15 August 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Xandria_members.jpg
Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Xandria_members.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

[edit] Replaceable fair use Image:Forever Slave.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Forever Slave.jpg. I noticed the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the image description page and edit it to add , without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
- On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if not used in an article), per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. J Milburn 14:40, 25 October 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Notability of Forever Slave
A tag has been placed on Forever Slave requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article appears to be about a real person, organization (band, club, company, etc.), or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable. If this is the first page that you have created, then you should read the guide to writing your first article.
If you think that you can assert the notability of the subject, you may contest the deletion by adding hangon
to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm the subject's notability under Wikipedia guidelines.
For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Mdsummermsw (talk) 12:43, 3 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Alice's Inferno
A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Alice's Inferno, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the dated prod
notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. If you agree with the deletion of the article, and you are the only person who has made substantial edits to the page, please add db-author
to the top of Alice's Inferno. Mdsummermsw (talk) 15:01, 4 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Image source problem with Image:Nightwish Century Child.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Nightwish Century Child.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.
As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the GFDL-self tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 21:57, 27 April 2008 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Undeath (talk) 21:57, 27 April 2008 (UTC)
