Toronto Welsh RFC
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Toronto Welsh Rugby Football Club was founded in 1961 in Ontario, Canada.
The founding members were Peter Hughes, Don Farquarson, and Ron Jones. The latter became the first team captain of the club. It was originally intended that only Welsh players would play for the club, but this never materialized. The first games were played at High Park.
One of the best players to come through the ranks was Dave Lougheed. He represented Canada at international level in rugby union.
The club has strong links with many teams from Wales, including Pontypridd RFC, Maesteg RFC, and Kidwelly RFC.
In 2003, Toronto Welsh RFC combined with the University of Toronto to form a new team, the Toronto Dragons RFC. (However, the University of Toronto now again has a separate team, which is part of the Varsity Blues.)
