strictly speaking this item was borrowed from the bakery trade, as chefs had no distintive uniform of their own.In classic kitchen the height or size of the hat denotes the seniority of the wearer, sometimes reaching ridiculous proportions.A firm starching is required and this can be uncomfortable in the hot enviroment of the kitchen as streams of starch and perspiration run down your face!

No offense to Mobutu Sese Seko, but mightn't it make more sense to have a picture of a chef's toque in here, since toques are much more strongly associated with that usage than Mobutu Sese Seko's? AdjectiveAnimal 14:12, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
