TOPOGUIDE
English collector of Baedeker and all other pre 1945 travelguides.
Collecting travel guides is a fast growing hobby, especially in the USA, UK, France , Germany, Spain & the Middle East. Most guides seen now sell at exorbitant prices and are usually not in the best condition, and what was not collectable 10 years now are suitable for serious collections.
Many guides will invariably have faults, spine worn, inner hinges cracked, the henious crime of cellotape repairs, maps torn, missing or badly misfolded.
Guides in poor condition can be bought cheaply, especially with maps missing, if a map is missing, the price is drastically affected. Collectors buy such guides with faults hoping they can find an additional copy in bad condition with the wanted maps, and paste in to the better copy. Guides in perfect condition with maps missing can be enhanced this way affecting the value 1000%.
Starters guides in the UK would be the lovely Wardlock series(Ward and Lock) from 1890`s to the 1970`s. Their hey day was the 1920`s-30`s covering all of the UK towns and some foreign destinations. A truly collectable guidebook series, underpriced and can be found 2007 at the £3 range. Full of maps, photographs and adverts. They an interesting date system and location, which makes them good fun to collect
