Talk:Topsite (www)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I saw first references to www topsites online around 1994. Google search for term topsite returns about 5 million hits and with keyword vote, there's about 800 000 results. These www-sites which the article refers rank top50/top100/top200 etc sites related to specified subject. Most of the sites back then were warez related crappy link-after-link ad-scams but there also were more legit webring based, that ranked non-warez related web pages.

I actually found few good electronics related pages, which I was unable to find with search engines back then, just by clicking the next listed page arrow on webring bar. I see these sites as obsolete though since search algorithms and amount of indexed pages have improved alot since the early days of the web.

There are 14 million results on Google for "Topsites", and this is the best page we can get? It either needs to be rewritten or deleted. And these days, I'm sure there are more anime and video game topsites than warez. The author of the article probably associated them with warez because he probably comes across them while he is downloading warez. That is probably a source of bias. And search engines may do the trick for tech-saavy users, but have you ever tried watching normal people use Google? It's not a very efficient process.

It WAS a mess, but I think we have a good base to go forward now.

Uh, there were no topsites in 1994 (as mentioned above). There is NO dispute TopSiteLists.com invented the original concept in 1999.

Web topsites are overwhelmingly scam and malware ridden. I avoid them like the plague. This article could use a small dose of negativity to make it balanced and informative.90.134.71.247 (talk) 13:58, 24 January 2008 (UTC)
