Tooting Junction station

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tooting Junction station was a railway station in Tooting on the 'Merton Branch' of the Tooting, Merton and Wimbledon Railway. It was opened in 1868. It also served the main line from Wimbledon into Central London.

It was replaced in 1894 by the current Tooting railway station slightly to the East, principally because it was too small to handle the volume of traffic. It largely ceased to have any purpose following the closure of the Merton Branch in 1929, althrough goods trains continued to use the nearby yard.

The station building survived for more than a century after the last passengers had used it, and was used as a private dwelling, but in 2004 was demolished, and new houses built on the site. Fragments of the platforms remain, and the original footbridge has been converted to pedestrian use. [1]
