[edit] Your recent edits
Hi there. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. On many keyboards, the tilde is entered by holding the Shift key, and pressing the key with the tilde pictured. You may also click on the signature button located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your name and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. Thank you! --SineBot (talk) 07:53, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Speedy deletion of Santidev Ghosh
A tag has been placed on Santidev Ghosh requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for biographies.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}}
to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you. I intend to fix this page with more detail and reference to how this person is very relevant and needs to be linked to the pages of Rabindranath Tagore and also on the Wikipedia page on Rabindra Sangeet}}Tonymitra (talk) 17:29, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Please do not recreate deleted articles
Please do not recreate deleted articles like you did with Santidev Ghosh. It was deleted because it was not appropriate for Wikipedia and it will likely be deleted again. Thank you. --From-cary (talk) 19:11, 16 March 2008 (UTC)
- If you want to create an article about him, I would suggest you create first a subpage of your user page (e.g. User:Tonymitra/Santidev Ghosh) and work on it there. (Place a note at the top that it's a work in progress.) Then put it in the page Wikipedia:Drawing board to get further opinions. ... discospinster talk 19:20, 16 March 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the note. I did not recreate the page, but was trying to edit it and put more information in an effort to stop it being deleted, but, I am guessing, it got deleted already, and my effort to save the update might have caused a recreation. Actually I am not an expert with Wikipedia, and sometimes feel frustrated for not being able to add useful information and material. I have been searching for a friend who can spend a bit of time showing me the ropes.
Anyhow, I did follow your advise, and created a subpage on the person Santidev Ghosh. Now I am trying to follow your second advise, which is to put that in the page Wikipedia:Drawing board. While I can click the hot link and go to the Wikipedia Drawing board, and read the exchanges there, I am yet to figure out how to "put" my subpage there. Can you please help?
I come from the part of India which relates to the pages and subjects I am trying to augment, but I live in Vancouver, Canada, and do not have anyone among my personal friends here, who knows anything about entering data into Wikipedia. Appreciate any help.
Actually, I am not even certain you will read this message, or if it will show up in your Wikipedia. I hope it does. Thanks Tonymitra (talk) 22:32, 16 March 2008 (UTC)
- What you want to do is go to Wikipedia:Drawing board and click "Click here to start a new discussion". For the Subject/Headline, put in the name of the article, then paste the code of your article into the box. Add a note at the beginning specifying what kind of help you are looking for. I will tell you now that one thing you will definitely need is reliable sources establishing that this person is notable by Wikipedia standards. The two important pages to read for that are WP:RS (reliable sources) and WP:BIO (notability for persons). Some external links would be helpful, such as this and this, to give an idea of his status in his field. ... discospinster talk 02:21, 17 March 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the help. I did as you suggested. The page on Santidev Ghosh would grow with time, and I shall personally be working on it little by little, apart from what other members might do. But for now, please check the page out at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Tonymitra/Santidev_Ghosh and also copied it all at Wikipedia:Drawing board
Is the page still not deserving to be on Wikipedia? Sure, it needs more iinformation, and it will come. But meanwhile, can it be put up on Wikipedia as it is now? I can then get more people interested to contribute on it once they see it up on Wikipedia. Please help and allow the page to up approved and up. Tonymitra (talk) 05:48, 17 March 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Drawing board
Hello, Tonymitra. Thank you for your note at the drawing board. You have a reply. Moonriddengirl (talk) 12:30, 17 March 2008 (UTC)
- Another response, at the same location. :) --Moonriddengirl (talk) 02:40, 18 March 2008 (UTC)
Thanks, Moonriddengirl for all your help. I have cleaned up the page and reworked it as you had suggested and created an example. It is at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Tonymitra/Santidev_Ghosh. What more do I need to do? Can I create a page now on Santidev Ghosh and copy the content from my user sub page, or do I need to show it to someone first ?Tonymitra (talk) 04:38, 18 March 2008 (UTC)
- Happy if I can be of assistance. :) I've done a little bit of work on the article, mostly what we call "wikifying" it, which means putting it in standard Wikipedia form. I also brought back your sources from earlier versions. In regards to next steps, I posted that reply at the drawing board, but I will copy and paste it here for convenience.
“ | Hi. Sorry for the delay. We are operating, I believe, in different time zones. :) I think it's a fine start. You need to remove the signature from the bottom (we don't sign pages; what we write, we release by GFDL for all others to work on. We do retain right to authorship credit, but that is found in the article's history. As far as gaining approval, unfortunately it doesn't work that way. There are three steps in the deletion process. The first, speedy deletion,is meant to be used for articles that are clearly inappropriate for Wikipedian in specific ways. The second, "proposed deletion" is meant for uncontroversial deletions of articles that fail to meet policies and guidelines. The third, deletion debate, is for articles the deletion of which will be controversial. Sometimes these become quite heated, and some articles are nominated more than once. I don't think your article is at risk for any of those, but I can't guarantee it, and neither can anyone else. I'm going to tweak a little bit in your userspace. When you're ready, I think you can move it to article space. I will gladly help with this, if you like. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 11:32, 18 March 2008 (UTC) | ” |
- I have watchlisted your page now, which means that if you leave me a note here, I will see it. (Generally after several days, I remove pages from watchlisting. Once this article is successfully launched, you're welcome to come to my talk page if I can assist you with anything else.) --Moonriddengirl (talk) 11:49, 18 March 2008 (UTC)
Hi Tony, the article looks really good. Thanks for your contributions. If you have any other questions, you can also ask me on talk page. ... discospinster talk 15:18, 18 March 2008 (UTC)
Thanks again, discospinster, much appreciate your helpful hints and for pointing me to the right direction of the Wikipedia:Drawing board.
[edit] Section break
--Moonriddengirl- Yes, I want to talk about it some more. First, I am amazed at the amount of time you spent on this page, with what must be inscrutable information about an inscrutable place with inscrutable cultural references.
I have several questions, looking forward to improving that page, as well as gather more information for additional pages on related topics, mostly going back to the same place and the same time period (last century - eastern part of India - Bengali Renaissance and the reform movement within the Indian socieity).
1. I did not figure out how you "moved" the article out of my subpage to the main section. I would have created a new page and copy/pasted the information from my sub page.
2. Another question that comes to mind immediately, is, if I want to put supporting reference on some of the information up there on the page on Santidev Ghosh, but the supporting info in not on line, but taken off a printed book, what is the best way to do that ?
I don't know if you will be reading this part. I hope you do. But, if I should take this conversation someplace else, please tell me where.
A last footnote - the people of Santiniketan, and of the University there (Visva Bharati University) and the attached school Patha Bhavana did not have much of an internet access in the past, and are not savvy enough to engage in Wikipedia. As a result, a lot of material on Wikipedia which relate to their rich cultural history is ill-represented on Wikipedia. Some of them are closely watching what is happening to the Santidev Ghosh page. It is my hope that we should be, gradually, get them interested to actively participate, and learn the ropes on how to be good contributors to Wikipedia. For now, they are curious to see how my efforts come out. This very topic is scheduled to be discussed, among other things, in a public meeting in Santiniketan within the next week. I wont be able to attend, but learn the views that come out of it, since it would be recorded.
Again - my sincere thanks to you for taking a special interest in an esoteric subject. Tonymitra (talk) 20:13, 18 March 2008 (UTC)
- Oh, it is my pleasure. I enjoy helping, and I enjoy learning about new things, which makes me a perfect volunteer for the drawing board. :) Plus, it's really rewarding to work with an editor as motivated as you are to figuring out how things are done.
- I moved the page by clicking on the tab along the top labeled "move". It's sixth in. When you click on it, it asks you for the new page title and gives you a block to explain your actions. This is a good thing, because if people don't understand why you've moved a page, they may assume that you shouldn't have moved it. :) You could also have copied & pasted the information from your sub-page, but note that in general you can only do this when you are the only contributor. (You can see Help:Merge if you want to know why.) There are specific citation templates that you can use to introduce print references. You can see them at Wikipedia:Citation templates. More general information on citations is available at Wikipedia:Citing sources. I'm going to put a graphical welcome box at the top of your page, because it contains quite a lot of information that you might find valuable. If any of it perplexes you (I learn best by doing), you can get explanations from me or from the help desk. It sounds fabulous that the people of Santiniketan are considering contributing more to Wikipedia. I'm glad you were willing to undertake this experiment, and I hope that it will lead to improvement of Wikipedia. Given your interest in expanding such topics, you might want to check out Wikipedia:WikiProject India, which is a group of editors who have come together to work on articles related to India. They seem to be a pretty active group, which is good. Some Wikiprojects languish for lack of attention. Please let me know how the meeting goes. :) --Moonriddengirl (talk) 22:24, 18 March 2008 (UTC)
Thanks User:Moonriddengirl . I will try to check items you mentioned. One last question for now. If I wanted to create another subpage under tonymitra, just like the Santidev Ghosh subpage was created (but not by me), how do I do it?Tonymitra (talk) 02:44, 19 March 2008 (UTC)
- Same way you'd create any page. You type in the name, and it offers you the option to create. Many people (like me) maintain a "sandbox" to work in. Mine is called User:Moonriddengirl/sandbox. After I workshop a new article there, I move it to the permanent space one way or another. If you wanted to do the same, you could just follow this link: User:Tonymitra/sandbox and type in it. :) If you want to call it something else, you can do that, too--just put a different word after the /. For example, User:Tonymitra/workshop or User:Tonymitra/articles.--Moonriddengirl (talk) 02:51, 19 March 2008 (UTC)
