[edit] Let us discuss some things

First of all I don't think Wikipedia is the right medium to propagate Catalan nationalism.

[edit] Fishes

There is a new proposal on naming conventions for fish being discussed at WikiProject Fishes. As a member of a project whose naming conventions would be affected (WikiProject Aquarium Fishes), your feedback would be appreciated at the WikiProject Fishes talk page here. Neil916 (Talk) 01:01, 28 March 2007 (UTC) You say: "They are counted as part of the Catalan Countries, and more polemically (because of different frontier changes throughout history) of the historic territory of Catalonia."

Who counts La Franja as part of your "Catalan Countries"? Don't say me it is a Catalan radical party, then that would the same argument like Hitler's assumption that The Netherlands should be part of Germany.

You write: "Catalonia (Catalan: Catalunya ; Spanish: Cataluña ; Aranese: Catalonha ; French: Catalogne) is a region in southern Europe, formerly an independent country, embracing a territory now situated in the north-east of Spain and an adjoining portion of southern France.

The historic territory of Catalonia corresponds to the present-day Autonomous Community of Catalonia (also named Southern or Spanish Catalonia with respect to French or Northern one), plus other territories including Northern Catalonia (Catalan: Catalunya Nord), part of France since the 1659 Treaty of the Pyrenees, and the small Franja de Ponent or Western Strip, which is also disputedly considered part of the historic territory of Aragon because of several Aragon-Catalonia border changes throughout history."

My question: when was "Catalonia" independent? You say it was part of the Crown of Aragon. How could have been Catalonia independent being subjected to the King of Aragon? After the creation of the "Spanish mark" by Charles the Great (thus part of the Carolingian Empire, not an independent territory" the Kingdom of Aragon was responsible for what you call "Catalonia"?.

Ok, would you please answer my questions before I put you some more? Thank you.

Please, try to be more respectful. I could also say in a demagogical way the same for Spanish case and consider that it is Fascim or whatever... And thanks God, that's not true for most neither Catalan nor Spanish nationalists.
I can understand from your position that you do not like these terms, but they are widely used in Catalan-speaking community, not only from what you say that are radical parties. Please search in Google Països Catalans+Franja
The former Principalty of Catalonia, as the former Kingdom of Valencia and the Kingdom of Aragon may all be regarded as independent countries under the same crown, and that is until the end of the War of the Spanish Succession. Despite the differences of history and origin, a rough analogy can be drawn with the same distany in present Commonwealth.

[edit] Catalonia a nationality?

Toniher, first of all let me thank you for your contributions, particularly to the article on Catalonia, which I have been reading.

I have just posted a note to that article's discussion page about the following line that you inserted on 7 December 2005: "Catalonia was officially recognised as a nationality in the Catalan Statute of Autonomy enacted in 1979 pursuant to the Spanish Constitution of 1978."

'Catalonia' is a place. 'Nationality' is a characteristic that is usually applied to a person. Did you mean:

  • "Catalonia was officially recognised as a nation..."?
  • or "Catalan was officially recognised as a nationality..."?
  • or "Catalonia was officially recognised as an autonomous community..." (My quick reading of the 1978 statute leads me to believe that this was the intent of the statute.)

Again. Thank you for our contributions. (This Yankee has much to learn about Catalonian (and European) history!)

[edit] Ja estem amb la qüestió de noms

What's the problem with Valencian Community? As you know this is the official name, if we start the País Valencià thing, then soon you will have someone posting Regne de València or something like that. Besides, and more important, I am from the Valencian Community, but not from València, thus I don't feel represented by the name Valencia by itself. Finally, if you write next to Valencia that in catalan/valencian the translation is País Valencià/Comunitat Valenciana, that is obviously confusing for not local audiences which expect a literal translation from whatever term is before the translation itself. That is why I have to insist in the previous version. Thanks Mountolive 16:22, 9 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Officiality of Aranese in Catalonia

Hello Toniher. In the article about Catalonia, I've changed your revision about the officiality of Occitan language (Aranese) in the Autonomous Community of Catalonia. Please let me explain that change. According to Article 6 of Preliminary Title of the current "Estatut" of Autonomous Community of Catalonia (your citation: http://www.gencat.net/generalitat/eng/estatut/titol_preliminar.htm), "The Occitan language, known as Aranese in Aran, is Aran's own language and is official in Catalonia, as established by this Estatut and by the laws of linguistic normalisation". You can find the explanation of "as established by this Estatut" in Article 36 of Title I of that "Estatut" (http://www.gencat.net/generalitat/eng/estatut/titol_1.htm): "1. In Aran each individual has the right to know and use Aranese and to be attended orally and in writing in Aranese in his or her dealings with the Public Administration bodies and public and private entities accountable to them. 2. The citizens of Aran have the right to use Aranese in their dealings with the Generalitat". So Aranese has only an official status in Aran Valley and in the dealings of Aranese people with the Generalitat. That's not the same of being official in the hole territory of the Autonomous Community of Catalonia, like Catalan or Spanish. Thanks and best regards.Eddl 12:05, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Please

You have your views just like anyone else, but I deem you as a reasonable guy, so let's just not open a silly edit war with the Valencian Community name, ok? If you want to open new section with names, that is ok, but before you do that, you must be aware and weigh the controversy this involves and that, possibly, it may not end looking as you wish. Gràcies Mountolive 22:29, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

Hi there; mate, don't be sorrut, in English the habitual meaning of Castilian is something related to the history of Castille and the language is called Spanish, nevermind what a website may say: the article is not to push ignote versions of the name, you can do that in the Spanish language article if you want, but doing it in the Spanish languages section is, obviously, POV pushing. No one calls Spanish "Castilian" out of Spain other than, maybe, a bunch of linguists. Or put it this other way: you being a Catalan nationalist shouldn't have any problem in putting it as "Spanish" as confronted to Catalan, right? Mountolive 20:22, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] "Castilian"

Hi Toniher. Well, the thing is that, in English, "Castilian" is not the same as "castellà". In English "Castilian" means "things Castile", for example, "Castilian architecture". In a linguistic context it would mean, roughly "Castilian dialect of Spanish", if that exists. But "castellà" doesn't mean the Castilian dialect, but just Spanish. Besides, the usage of "Castilian" related to language is very restricted to specialized linguistics. Castellà is widely known in English as Spanish. The discussion is somewhere in the archives, where you will see there was some consensus also from the Catalanist side. If this is reopened, it may get nasty (as usual in this article). I hope this makes it more clear. Mountolive | Talk 14:58, 14 April 2007 (UTC)

No problem. I appreciate your understanding, thank you for that. I think it would be best if you removed yourself the "Castilian" reference from the Catalonia article, in order not to reopen the polemics there.
As I said "Castilian" is not a valid translation of "Castellà" as a language. In English this would be taken as things in Castile, for example Burgos is a Castilian city or whatever.
You could use the word in the original Catalan, and say "Spanish is called Castellà" which is accurate, but I think is messing the article for the sake of I don't know well what...(even though I have suspicions :P) Mountolive | Talk 15:29, 14 April 2007 (UTC)
I think there are few wikipedians (specially in and around Spain ;) who would revert themselves after being given grounded advice in this regard. You and I we may "shoot" from different sides, but you have proven to me being a fair editor, despite our different POVs. Thanks. Mountolive | Talk 21:03, 14 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Pyrénées-Orientales

What are you doing? You know enough Catalan history to know that your edit was factually incorrect: worse, it is a factually incorrect edit in a subject which you know has been contentious. I must formally warn you for edit warring and disruption: if I see another example like that I shall block you, regardless of the respect in which I usually hold your honestly held views. Physchim62 (talk) 16:34, 18 April 2007 (UTC)

OK I will go with your corrected edit as accurate enough for the length of the paragraph. Please be careful though, I value your non-contentious edits too much to want to see you blocked. Physchim62 (talk) 19:12, 18 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Request for mediation

I have filed a Request for Mediation concerning the article Valencia (autonomous community) (edit|talk|history|links|watch|logs). The issues for which I have requested mediation are:

  • Should the header to the infobox contain the Spanish name of the region as well as the Valencian/Catalan name?
  • Should the lead section contain the comment: "Valencian (as Catalan is known in this territory)"?
  • Should the the proportions of the Valencian flag used in this article be 1:2 or 2:3?

If you feel that there are other issues which require mediation, you may add them in the "Additional issues to be mediated" section.

If you agree to formal, non-binding mediation on these issues, please sign on the RfM page. I hope that you will agree, as mediation will be impossible without your help.

Best wishes, Physchim62 (talk) 15:16, 27 April 2007 (UTC)

  • El commentari ""Valencian (as Catalan is known in this territory)" hauria d'aparèixer en la primera secció?

Physchim62 (talk) 15:16, 27 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Linkat.png

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Linkat.png. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 00:26, 6 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Orphaned non-free image (Image:AVL.gif)

Thanks for uploading Image:AVL.gif. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 07:18, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Racó Català

A tag has been placed on Racó Català requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article appears to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think that you can assert the notability of the subject, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm the subject's notability under Wikipedia guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this.

Hi, Toni. I'm trying to post the below text in the relative talk page, but it is not allowing me for some spam filter reason which I dont get yet. Anyway, I hope the system allows me to post it here in your talkpage, since the comment is mostly addressed to you after your edition.

Salut!

Whether we like it or not, culturally, the pays catalan is nowadays sound French culturally. While not denying that there is a minority of self-aware Catalan people in there, the average person in that area will know better the lyrics of La Marselleise than Els Segadords, will write better in French than in Catalan, will know better Ségolène Royal than Carod-Rovira, just to use some randome examples.

'Historically' defines it much better (and it doesnt exclude whatever is left of Catalan culture). I am not the expert in policies (he who knows better and may be watching, will explain it better) but I guess a matter of WP:DUE weight. [edit] Northern Catalan

Hi, I noticed that you restored Northern Catalan, which is fine and I won't turn it back into a redirect but I think that it ought to be expanded and verified. Right now it's an unreferenced stub and if you could expand it that would be great. Also, I noticed that you restored the use of this image at Catalan language but there are a number of problems with this map

  1. It cites no sources, making it unreferenced
  2. It is imprecise.
  3. It doesn't look as nice as other maps on Wikipedia
  4. What I have seen when looking up Catalan dialects (and I'll admit it's not much) contradicts what it presents as the presence of transitional zones as well as the border between North-Western Catalan and Valencian.

This image looks nicer but there is still an issue of verifiability. — Ƶ§œš¹ [aɪm ˈfɻɛ̃ⁿdˡi] 20:25, 24 March 2008 (UTC)

What I'm referring to when I say that it is imprecise is the lines are sloppily drawn and I really doubt that they reflect accurate isoglosses. The transition zones are reflected by tentacle like stripes that look like they were drawn in microsoft paint.
As for the transition between North-Western and Valencian, what you say seems to be reflected in the other map (which also puts Andorra where you like it). It looks like this is too recent for me to get ahold of; it and the sources listed at the Catalan Wikipedia are not available at my local university. I have, however, been trying to check out English language books on Catalan dialects so, as long as you approve of the image that's there right now, we'll keep it there until we can improve it. — Ƶ§œš¹ [aɪm ˈfɻɛ̃ⁿdˡi] 21:06, 24 March 2008 (UTC)
