Haruki Murakami was intrigued by the name Tony Takitani when, at a garage sale on Maui, he found a yellow T-shirt that said, Tony Takitani, House (D). At the time, Takitani was running for office. Murakami decided to write the man's life story as this novel.[citation needed]

Tony Takitani meets, falls in love with and marries a woman who is obsessed with shopping for clothes and accessories. When she passes away, he is completely distraught and ends up hiring a woman as an assistant with the one primary condition being that she should wear his wife's clothes everyday.
