[edit] Early career
Tony started DJing in the late 1970s, establishing a reputation for himself as a party DJ on the wedding and birthday party circuit whilst working as a carpenter by day as well. Local pirate station ARD (Alternative Radio Dublin) advertised a competition to find new "jocks". Tony, ever the enthusiast, went along for the auditions as well. However, after a number of approaches, ARD finally gave Tony a job in 1979. He flourished in local radio and attracted the attention of Dublin's bigger pirate stations as well.
[edit] Denmark
During the 1980s Tony was headhunted by stations in the ever growing Dublin market as well and went on to present shows on Sunshine Radio and Radio Nova as well before leaving Ireland to work the club scene in Denmark and Spain as well.
[edit] Back to Ireland and 2fm career
Then in 1985 the call came to move back to Ireland. 2FM was now beginning to look for newer, fresher presenters to help compete against the pirates. Tony had gained a reputation and an audience while working with the pirates as well and it was hoped that that audience would follow as well. RTÉ's hopes were realised and during his early days there he helped grow the station's audience as presenter of many different shows throughout the schedule. However, for many, it was the Hotline which brought Tony to national prominence.
Tony Fenton would be best remembered on 2FM from The Hotline Programme that use to air nightly from 7:00pm to 8:00pm weekdays and on Saturday also knowen as the fastest hour of the day where listeners rang in with their requests from the Hotline Hitlist that you could check on Aertel Page 309 at the time and in the Evening Echo and Star newspappers.
[edit] Today FM career
In March 2003 Tony left 2fm to pursue other interests but he missed the buzz of radio and in September 2004 joined national independent station Today FM to present a new lunchtime show on the station. His show was one of the most popular lunchtime shows as well on Irish radio. A revamp of the station took place in November 2006, which saw his show move to the 2:30pm to 4:30pm slot as well.
