Tony D'Costa

Tony D'Costa was a Madras based jazz and film music drummer who played with the well-known Tamil film composer and bandleader M. S. Viswanathan in the 1970s. He also influenced the next generation of drummers such as Sivamani. Two of his sons, Ricky D'Costa and Alan D'Costa are also proficient drummers in the Indian film music industry. Tony was also an inspiring drum teacher, patient, skillful and appreciative. Tony was also a drum soloist, with his own version of Joe Morello's 'Take Five' solo which merged into a 'train' solo. He also was a master of polyrhythm, especially in the Afro-Cuban context, played on the drum set.
