Tony Cardwell is a saloon car driver who was initially based in Christchurch, New Zealand but now races in the North Island. He learnt his trade at Woodford Glen Speedway, Kaiapoi.
He has achieved more podium finishes in the New Zealand Saloon Car Championships since its inception in 1969/70 than any other driver. His record stands at four wins, four seconds and three thirds. His four titles were earned in 1984/85 in Dunedin, 1987/88 in Wellington, 1995/96 again in Dunedin and yet another Dunedin title in 2007/2008, over ten years after his last win.
His first car was a Mustang in the 1970's followed by a Mustang Cobra II. He then owned two different Pontiacs, followed by a Buick Skyhawk. His latest car is a Corvette.
He is easily the most successful saloon car driver produced by the South Island, having won nine Canterbury titles and seven South Island titles.
