[edit] Early life
Tony Browne was born in Waterford in 1973. He was educated locally and in time he would come to be regarded as one of the greatest hurlers of his generation.
[edit] Playing career
[edit] Club
Browne plays his club hurling with the famous Mount Sion club in Waterford. He enjoyed some success at underage levels before winning his first senior county championship medal in 1994. Browne added another two county medals in 1998 and 2000, before winning three titles in-a-row in 2002, 2003 and 2004. He won his seventh county medal in 2006.
[edit] Inter-county
Browne joined the Waterford minor and under-21 hurling teams in the early 1990s. He had little success at minor level, however, he captained the county's under-21 hurlers to Munster and All-Ireland titles in 1992. Two years later in 1994 he won another Munster medal with the under-21 team. By this stage Browne had already joined the Waterford senior hurling team, however, at the time Waterford hurling was at a low ebb. A defeat by Kerry in 1993 only added to their problems. By 1998 the situation had improved and Waterford came close to winning the Munster Championship, however, Browne's side were beaten by Clare in a replay. In spite of this his performance in the championship earned him an All-Star award as well as the honour of being named 'Hurler of the Year.'
In 2002 Browne finally captured his first senior Munster medal. It was Waterford's first provinvial title since 1963. Unfortunately his side were later defeated in the All-Ireland semi-final. Two years later in 2004 he won a second Munster medal following a thrilling game against Cork. Once again Waterford were later defeated in the All-Ireland semi-final. The following two years brought little success for Browne and Waterford. In 2005 and 2006 they reached the All-Ireland knock-out series, however, they were beaten on both occasions by Cork. In spite of this lack of success Browne won another All-Star award in 2006.
The following April saw Browne and Waterford triumph in the National Hurling League final over Kilkenny at Semple Stadium in Thurles, with one of the enduring images coming as Browne powered past two Kilkenny opponents in stoppage time. He later added a third Munster title to his collection following a defeat of Limerick in the provincial final.
