Tonga High School is a selective state-owned co-ed secondary school located in Nukuʻalofa, Tonga. The school educates students between the ages of 11 to 18 (Forms 1 - 7).

[edit] Background

It is situated in Nuku'alofa, Tonga's capital city, and was established in 1947 by King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV with the aim of providing unprecedented academic opportunities and better learning facilities for Tonga's brightest students.

Enrollment is selective, and to be considered prospective students must gain an average score of 75% in 3 exams - English, Maths and Science, usually sat at the end of a child's 6th year at primary school. The school prefers that students enter the school at Form 1 level but also welcomes those wishing to enter at upper levels, provided there are places available.

There are four houses: Nua (Yellow), Kava (Red), Sangone (Blue) and Tele'a (Green). English must be spoken at all times, and students are continually working towards maintaining the academic excellence for which the school is synonymous.

Although steeped in it's proud tradition, the school is a modern learning institution. 2004 saw the completion of the campus's reconstruction, and the school now boasts new facilities including state-of-the-art computer rooms and science labs. Phase two of reconstruction is due to commence in 2009, and will see the opening of a brand new gymnasium, swimming pool and stadium.

The Tongan government has made it a priority to invest in education and students in order to make Tonga more competitive on a global scale. Today, Tonga has the world's highest literacy rate and there are more Tongans with PhD degrees per capita than anywhere else in the world. [1]
