Woohoo! First post!
Whoa, that is one big archive. Yes, your talk page is still on my watchlist. That's what you get for being the one who created my talk page. BigNate37(T) 19:38, 12 August 2006 (UTC)
- Impressive indeed. I couldn't wait that long to archive, I guess I'm just a premature archiver. BigNate37(T) 19:45, 12 August 2006 (UTC)
Partly because I like the essay, partly to hold you forever accountable for making the first edits to my talk page, and partly to make archiving your talk page by date a hassle, I wanted to stop by and remind you not to stuff beans up your nose. BigNate37(T) 23:01, 10 July 2007 (UTC)
Orphaned fair use image (Image:GDI MLRS (C&CR).JPG)
This file may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading Image:GDI MLRS (C&CR).JPG. I notice the 'image' page currently specifies that the image can be used under a fair use license. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BigDT 00:50, 15 August 2006 (UTC)
Re: Formatting issue
Is there some existing convention we could follow? The one that comes to mind would be cities; how are conflicting city names handled? (If there isn't one, we could always create something in-project; but I would at least like to make sure we're not going against some existing standards before we do so.) Kirill Lokshin 21:11, 16 August 2006 (UTC)
- Following the official naming seems sensible (assuming it doesn't seriously conflict with other conventions—particularly the one about most common names). Is there a substantial problem with pages being at an incorrect name by this rule, or do most articles already seem to have the correct name? If the problem is not a massive one, we could probably get away with just moving the non-conforming ones directly. Kirill Lokshin 16:42, 23 August 2006 (UTC)

Heres the link to C&C 3's GDI Gameplay movie. I know you (and the rest of the RTS world) have been waiting for this. I'll give you the honor of linking the C&C page to it. I don't mess with that stuff.
http://www.gametrailers.com/player.php?type=wmv&id=12509 If it's not there anymore (or moved, cause I know they do that when a lot of people direct link there rather then go through the advertisements) I uploaded it here for a while: http://ghost.adktrails.com/CC3.wmv

Well, high-end processes like FAC/FARC are already noted on {{WPMILHIST Announcements}}. As far as things with cleanup tags, there have been some attempts at keeping a list by bot (see Wikipedia:Pages needing attention/Military), but it's a rather complex task, and hasn't had much success. Fair-use images removed from your user page
Hello, TomStar81. I've removed some images from User:TomStar81/World War II, as they are copyrighted, unlicensed images that are being used on Wikipedia under claims of fair use. Unfortunately, by Wikipedia policies, no fair-use images can be used on user pages; please see the ninth item of the Wikipedia fair-use policy and Wikipedia:Removal of fair use images. These images have not been deleted from any articles. If you have any questions, please let me know. —Bkell (talk) 16:25, 17 September 2006 (UTC)
- Actually, I was called for that earlier, when I had fair use images on my user page. I was unaware that the "no fair use images on user pages" rule also extended to works in progress. I will be more carefull about that from now on. TomStar81 (Talk) 18:56, 17 September 2006 (UTC)
- Technically it applies to everything outside the article namespace, which includes anything with "User:" or "User talk:" or "Template:" in front of it. I probably would have left your "work in progress" alone, on the assumption that you would rework the article and move it back into the article namespace soon; but it appears from the page history that you haven't worked on it since the middle of July, so it seemed that it had stagnated, and unlikely that it was going to become "finished" and moved out of the User namespace any time soon. —Bkell (talk) 22:30, 17 September 2006 (UTC)
- Yeah, sadly, I have not had alot of time to work on it since July. First I had summer school, then we were on vacation for about a week in August, then school started, and now I can not seem to find a free moment to do active research on the war. Sooner or later (probably more later than sooner) I will get back to working on it again, although I am considering a braod overhaul to make the entire WWII article more enjoyable to read. TomStar81 (Talk) 22:49, 17 September 2006 (UTC)
Re:Image:Iowa Armament.JPG
Ok, CSD is criteria for speedy deletion, but which number 1 and 4 are you refering to? I do intend to upload a better picture of the weapons system at some point in the future, so I need to know which of the criterias were used to delete this in the first place. TomStar81 (Talk) 01:37, 21 September 2006 (UTC)
- Sorry if the shorthand was confusing: that's the letter "I" and then the number 4, as in the fourth criterion for images, lack of licencing information. Specifically, the image was tagged as an image with unknown copyright status for longer than a week. Note that I can undelete the image if you can determine its copyright status. --bainer (talk) 05:41, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

The pain in the diodes all down my left FPC...
Haha, great one mate. Gave me a much-needed laugh too. You can't believe how helpful Mr DNA can be in a Latin lesson... Just remembered my favourite conversation from the radio series:
Arthur: I eventually had to go down to the basement!
Prosser: That's the display department.
AD: With a torch...
P: The lights had... probably gone.
AD: So had the stairs.
P: Well you found the documents, didn't you?
AD: Yes. I eventually found them in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet, stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying 'Beware of the Leopard'. Ever thought of going into advertising?
Larffles indeed. —Vanderdecken∴ ∫ξφ 10:05, 28 September 2006 (UTC)
P.S. Oh how I loved Peter Jones:
"Go Stick Your Head in a Pig is the motto of the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation Complaints Division (the only part of the company to make a consistent profit) and is celebrated in its company song, sung by a million robots whose voices are all exactly a flattened fifth out of tune. It goes something like this...
Share and enjoy,
Share and enjoy,
Journey through life with a plastic boy,
Or girl by your side,
Let your pal be your guide,
And when it breaks down or starts to annoy,
Or grinds when it moves and gives you no joy,
'Cos it's eaten your hat,
Or had sex with your cat,
Bled oil on your floor,
Or ripped off your door,
And you get to the point you can't stand any more,
Bring it to us; we won't give a fig,
We'll tell you...
"Go Stick Your Head In A Pig"
...only slightly worse.
It arose from the fact that the four mile high sign of the previous motto, ‘Share and Enjoy’ sank into the ground under its own weight so only the top half was visible. In the local language, the top halves of this just happened to spell out ‘Go Stick Your Head in a Pig’."
- EDIT: Oh, what the hell: you made it into BJAODN. —Vanderdecken∴ ∫ξφ 10:13, 28 September 2006 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use images
This file may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading Image:Lightbars.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a free image could reasonably be found or created. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}
- On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. – Quadell (talk) (random) 13:51, 19 October 2006 (UTC)

Ghost in the Shell American Empire
I'm interested to know where you got your information for this article. Is it just copypasta from the 2nd GIG? The reason why I'm asking is because there was a discussion on one of the GameFAQs message boards concerning the state of the world during 2nd GIG and someone brought up this information. The original poster of the thread included two maps of the world of 2nd GIG as seen in the series behind the Chief Cabinet's Secretary's desk. In it, it appears that America is split into 2 different entities, none that include the area of the American Empire (the South and Southwest) as described in this article. However, there is also a debate as to whether or not the line splitting up the US represents a national border, as no border lines are drawn in Europe, South America, Africa, and much of Eastern Asia. Also looking at the picture, if the lines do represent borders, then China appears to have swallowed up the Indian Subcontinent and much of Indochina. This is a link to the above mentioned image [1]. Thanks. --GhostStalker 16:10, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
- Responding to your comments on my talk page, if the lack of borders in Europe are supposed to represent the EU, is the same to be said about Africa and South America? Also, in 2nd GIG, they specifically mentioned the country of Germany. The countries of England and France are also both mentioned specifically.
- I can see where you might say that the expanded China might be because of military conquest. You might notice that there's a big hole where Beijing used to be. Others have suggested that this was because of a super nuke used or something to that effect. The same is true for Moscow and much of Eastern Europe, along with maybe the US Eastern Seaboard. New Zealand seems to have vanished off the face of the Earth. That's definitely evidence of a Nuclear World War III. However, I doubt that the rest of the world would have acquised to a Chinese takeover of the entire Indian subcontinent... --GhostStalker 22:28, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

Recent list of GITS episodes edits
Please remember to mark your edits as minor when (and only when) they genuinely are minor edits (see Wikipedia:Minor edit). Marking a major change as a minor one (and vice versa) is considered poor etiquette. The rule of thumb is that only an edit that consists solely of spelling corrections, formatting, and minor rearranging of text should be flagged as a 'minor edit'. Thanks!
I'm referring to this one or this one, to cite only two of many on this page.-- Salvax T - C--22:43, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

Re: Higher ranking Opinion needed
I agree with you completely. The existence of a rider "recommending" a particular name isn't particularly meaningful; until the people actually responsible for choosing the name make some comment, the numerical designation is the most appropriate title. Kirill Lokshin 02:33, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
Re: While I am thinking about it...
It doesn't really matter, I think; the important thing is that somebody review the article, not where that review happens. One point to note, though, is that our peer review isn't very frequented by people outside the project, and is pretty geared towards generating suggestions for improvement; I'm not sure how effective it would be in evaluating whether sufficient improvement had already been done to an article.
You can go with whatever option you prefer, though. Kirill Lokshin 13:45, 1 December 2006 (UTC)

Is that what you're looking for? Kirill Lokshin 10:01, 16 December 2006 (UTC)
Re: Photo Question
Not sure. If the sailor took them, they're presumably {{PD-USGov}}; but I suppose it's possible, based on the wording on the site, that the sailor merely had them in his possession, and they were actually take by someone else. I'd be surprised if there weren't PD images of the ship available, though; I'm sure the Navy has taken its own photos. Kirill Lokshin 13:35, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

Hi Tom, I responded to your comment on the canidate page and I had question I thought I would go ahead and ask you here. Here is the copy from the Featured portal canidate page:
"I'm not 100% sure what you were meaning by your comment but I assume you were talking about the big gaping hole on the bottom left hand side that would appear when certain articles came up. If that was the case I have spent a lot of time on every article, picture, quote, etc. making sure that no matter what other article they are randomly displayed with that very little to no space is let empty on either side. Making the article look a lot cleaner too. So, if that was your objection thanks it forced me fix something that was bugging me anyway. If it wasn't and you were referring to something else please let me know."

USS Wisconsin (BB-64)
Sorry, I'm a bit picky, and I really want Wikipedia to raise its standards, as it claims to be doing. It's a good article, though, better, imo, than the reviewing comments led me to believe. Sandy asked someone with some knowledge in this area to edit it. I'm kinda the "short straw" as I go through the whole thing and make particular suggestions, rather than overall suggestions. Still, the article itself, in topic, depth of coverage, and quality of writing and research at this point are worthy of taking it a step higher. KP Botany 00:47, 9 January 2007 (UTC)
Regarding Wisconsin's nickname...I'd never heard the story about it being a combo of "Wisconsin" and "Kentucky" before though that sounds plausible. One thing, though, I've met crewmembers who served aboard her in the early 50s (pre-collision) and some of them call her "Wisky" too. I don't know if they called her that back when they were aboard or if they learned that nickname later. For whatever that's worth. ---B- 03:35, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading Image:Nod Initiate (C&CR).JPG. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. Thank you. Fair use images in user space
I just wanted to let you know that I removed Image:Leningraddiorama.gif and Image:NGE Iowas.png from User:TomStar81/World War II and User:TomStar81/Sandbox respectively per fair use criterion #9. Khatru2 08:43, 11 February 2007 (UTC)
Thanks! No really, thanks
I appreciate the partial credit on my mix up about Missouri's bow, TomStar81. It's the way I like to think I point out mistakes (try to include something the mistaken person is correct about). Please don't take my thank you as sarcasm (some people can get really angry when somebody points out a mistake no matter how respectfully you try to be, and because you can't see my body language or hear my tone of voice I feel the need to be clear about that.) In this case though irony motivates me to make clear my view that I was incorrect; I just got done expressing my view's on a mistake of confusion Ann Coulter made in 2005 so I'd feel kinda hypocritical not pointing out the error of my original statement myself. Hi Tom,
Just to let you know that the Featured Picture Image:Mug and Torus morph.gif is due to make an appearance as Picture of the Day on July 18, 2007. If you get a chance, you can check and improve the caption at Template:POTD/2007-07-18. howcheng {chat} 00:10, 7 July 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for the award
Glad to help out on the Iowa class battleship article. Of course, that's the easy part, the content and layout review is where the big money is. But with the WP:MILHIST and other editors on the job, FA status should continue to be upheld. — MrDolomite • Talk 02:07, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
USS Missouri Photos
Before uploading, I wanted a second opinion on if either of these would a worthy addition to USS Missouri (BB-63): Photo 1 Photo 2. I have much larger originals, and would likely crop them down a bit. I'd also like to replace the present turret photo featuring foreground tourists with this, where the tourists are less prominent. Also maybe move the Vets photo to left side to try to balance out the Museum section. Drop me a note on my talk page as I'm not keeping up with my watch list like I used to. Thanks, --J Clear 03:33, 20 March 2007 (UTC)
- It looks like Photo 1 and Photo 2 have already been uploaded to the USS Missouri Commons page, so I would refrain from uploading them here on Wikipedia; however, do feel free to switch out the photographs currently in the article with those that you have found. A little change from time to time is a good thing, and as long as the article's written content stays more or less intact I think the new pictures will look good on the page. TomStar81 (Talk) 05:23, 20 March 2007 (UTC)
-
- I "found" them in my own archive. After I found I had a photo of a model of USS Delaware (1820) and that article had nothing, I started to see what else I had. The ones of Mo in the commons are taken from the same vantage points (on the Arizona Memorial and from the Memorial's info center) as mine, but by someone else. Not surprising as those are the only vantage points open to civilians, except the Mo's dock, which is too close. I'll probably replace the bow shot on the commons, as it has a distracting crane. And the starbord side view on the commons looks a bit blurry, hmm but so does my full res version, so that's a push. Maybe a touch of sharpening.... Or if I ever go back, take a tripod. Sigh, no time now. --J Clear 23:01, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

Hey, Tom, I just wanted to let you know we moved this article off the citations list, after I saw it at PR. [2] [3] Best, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 18:12, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
- Tom, don't be in any hurry to nail that down. My issue isn't/wasn't with you or with that article; it's that so few reviewers check sources, and I feel like I'm often the only one doing that. Just want others to start noticing. It wasn't personal :-) Good luck tomorrow ! Best, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 03:37, 3 April 2007 (UTC)

I have a question concerning the article FC Winterthur. The football club template from the German Wikipedia is being used here. The English Wikipedia uses a different template. Deleted request to review Brats
The original request may have been made "in bad faith", however my contribution to it was not. To delete it after it was started was antagonistic and unhelpful. Sad mouse 14:37, 30 April 2007 (UTC)
- It is not a matter of "my camp". I have no vested interest in the article, never saw it before it made main page and won't bother to look at it after it stops being main page. I am sorry that I inaccurately said you deleted the article. However I strongly disagree with you labelling the request as "bad faith" - it may have been incorrect filing but that does not constitute bad faith, and I don't think it helps to be antagonistic. I just wanted your input on the recent problem I've been having editing this article - recently, a section has been added to this article [4] which is not reliably sourced. Inquiry regarding SC universe articles
To avoid the impatience of AMiB, we've gone "underground" with the SC articles, moving them into sandbox in order to carry out an effective clean-up into a full out of universe style whilst remaining outside the main Wikipedia area and thereby outside of premature and reckless intervention by people such as AMiB. The pages are clearly marked as works-in-progress. I don't know the links for the ones Clawed One backed up, but the ones I am currently working on are at User:S@bre/To Do. These are the latest versions of the faction and novel articles, as well as the planets now combined into a single article. I gladly welcome discussion on the articles to establish a consensus. -- S@bre 20:35, 3 July 2007 (UTC)
