It's getting better! Yay!
I've nomitated myself for the Mediation Committee. I hate self-nominations and I admit that it may be too soon, but... eh, we'll see how it goes.
I'm a student of law, history, and computer science at the University at Buffalo.
I am also the the very model of a modern major General.
I am American by citizenship and full-blood Irish by ethnicity. I am proud of both of these things, even if I viciously disagree with American foreign policy under at least three of the last four administration and irked by Catholic social conservatism in Irish politics. If that seems contradictory, especially on the first point: I am in love with the Grand Experiment and forever will be--I just don't like the scientists currently in charge and the people who put them there.
Summarily, regarding the last point: I am a Democrat. If you're one of those "liberals" who thinks that means nothing in the grand scheme of things, then you're a damned fool and I welcome you to continue contributing to the problem via inaction and snidely justifying your apathy. You're probably not a liberal. You're probably just lazy. (Members of the Green Party get a pass. Well, at least in electoral districts (and, every four years, states) which are not in realistic play, anyhow.)
(I should clarify something. I am American by citizenship by virtue of birth. Grandson of immigrants. I'm also in the process of applying for Irish citizenship, but that's something else entirely. On the paternal side, my grandmother and grandfather were both emigrants from County Clare. I still have a great deal of family there, mostly residing in and around Ennis. On the maternal side, I hail from County Mayo. The details there are, unfortunately, a wee bit fuzzy to me for a number of reasons. I am extremely proud of my surname. It is, in fact, Irish--not French, as some seem to think. It's an Irish language bastardization of the English word "lawless." I'm not the descendant of thieves, of course. We have a family history of being Irish national partisans. That's for another day, I suppose.)
Unyielding anti-Americanism sort of irks me. "It is bad because it American" is not a truism. "It is American because it is bad" is paranoia.
I was raised Roman Catholic all the way through confirmation, but I haven't practiced any sort of religion in about four years. I am either an atheist or an agnostic. Deism is charming, maybe. I have a certain respect and affinity for Jesuits, being a product of their education; I am a graduate of Canisius High School in Buffalo, New York.
I'm a diabetic and have been for about ten years now; I've used a MiniMed insulin pump for about six years and can never see myself returning to conventional injections. The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is a worthwhile cause.
I am a fan of representing diversity of opinion in any arguement and consider myself something of an advocate for NPOV. I falter horribly in this dedication when it comes to representing the diversity (har) of opinion in areas that border or fall within bigotry.
I believe I'll expand this when I have more time.
Oh. My name really is Tom Lillis. Ain't got nothin' to hide.
This page contains an editorial cartoon in reference to me. I am the talking bear. "Rick's Tally Ho" is a strip club. I do not frequent strip clubs; it's making fun of an interview of an exotic dancer I did for the magazine. It's funnier if you're familiar with it.
