Tommy Núñez is the founder of the Tommy Núñez foundation and a former NBA referee. He is very vocal about his humbled roots and troubled youth. He grew up in the projects. His father was absent. He was expelled from high school for disciplinary reasons. He is the father of current NBA referee Tommy Núñez, Jr..

Annually, Tommy hosts a basketball tournament which provides scholarships to youth in the Arizona area. Tommy Núnez' National Hispanic Basketball Classic (NHBC) is played every year during Labor Day Weekend, over 40 Hispanic basketball teams from all parts of the US attend this annual tournament.
