[edit] Tomb Raider / Anniversary
The following characters were introduced in Tomb Raider and almost all of them reappear in the remake, Tomb Raider: Anniversary.
- Lara Croft: The main protagonist of the Tomb Raider series is a British adventurer and archaeologist who travels the world in pursuit of priceless artifacts. She appears in every installment of the series.
- Jacqueline Natla: A wealthy businesswoman and the CEO of Natla Technologies. She is the main antagonist of Tomb Raider as well as Tomb Raider: Anniversary.
- Larson: One of the mercenaries hired by Jacqueline Natla to retrieve the Scion from Lara Croft. He also appears in Tomb Raider Chronicles along with Pierre Dupont. In Tomb Raider: Anniversary, Larson's role is expanded and he replaces The Cowboy. Larson later appears in Tomb Raider Chronicles via flashback where he and Pierre team up against Lara.
- Pierre Dupont: A mercenary hired by Jacqueline Natla to retrieve the Atlantean Scion from the tomb of Tihocan, in Greece. He later appears in Tomb Raider Chronicles via flashback where he is out on the streets of Rome looking for the Philosopher's Stone, but he intends to let Lara do the dirty work for him.
- The Cowboy: One of Jacqueline Natla's hired mercenaries. Along with another hired thug and Natla herself, the Cowboy ambushes Lara and steals both her guns and the now assembled Scion artifact in Egypt. In the following level, Lara must fight the Cowboy in Natla's Mines where she can retrieve the Magnums. The Cowboy appears in the original Tomb Raider, however he did not reappear in Tomb Raider: Anniversary, as the character is now merged with Larson.
- Jerome "The Kid" Johnson: Another of Natla's hired mercenaries, this time a teenage skateboarder who attacks his targets with dual mini SMGs. In the original Tomb Raider, he is the second enemy Lara encounters in Natla's Mines in order for her to retrieve her Uzi guns. Tomb Raider: Anniversary explains his background. He is only fought with through a cineractive and is killed by "Kold" Kin Kade. His skateboard was removed by the designers, and Toby Gard explains this was due to the notion that a "kid on a skateboard in this giant underground skatepark is a ridiculous notion."
- "Kold" Kin Kade: A large African-American henchman, he is the last of Natla's hitmen that Lara encounters in Tomb Raider. Lara confronts him near the end of Natla's Mines. His weapon of choice is a large shotgun. He reappears in Tomb Raider Anniversary, where he wields a large army knife since Larson is the character wielding the Shotgun. He is also given a history stating that he was a brutal and vicious killer and is Natla's bodyguard. In Tomb Raider Anniversary he is killed by The Kid.
- Doppelganger: Also known as Atlantean Lara, or Bacon Lara by some fans, she is a creature created by Jacqueline Natla, among other creatures. This particular creature mimics all Lara's moves, if Lara shoots at her both of them will get hurt. She is skinless and appears in Tomb Raider. She reappears in Tomb Raider: Anniversary and is available as an unlockable skin for Lara. She physically looks the same as Lara, apart from her complete lack of skin and hair. In Anniversary she has eyebrows, however. Her biography explains her to be soulless creature.
- Qualopec: Natla's brother. One of the ancient rulers of the lost continent of Atlantis, whose tomb is located in Peru.
- Tihocan: Another ruler of Atlantis, Tihocan was buried in Greece.
- Lord Henshingly/Richard Croft: Lara's father is first mentioned in her backstory in the Tomb Raider game manual, where he is said to have disowned his daughter after disapproving of her lifestyle. His first actual appearance is in the film Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, where he was portrayed by Jon Voight. In this appearance, his name is changed from Henshingly to Richard, a change also adopted in the game Tomb Raider: Legend. Both the film and Legend also show Richard as having a positive relationship with Lara prior to his death. Rather than going against her father's wishes to pursue archaeology, Lara is now shown to be following in his footsteps. In Tomb Raider: Anniversary, it is revealed that Richard and Lara had searched for the Atlantean Scion together at one point, and this motivates Lara to resume the search at Natla's offer. Richard narrates the introduction to several of the levels in Anniversary through Lara reading his journal.
- Winston Smith also appears in Anniversary though he was not introduced until Tomb Raider II. (see below)
[edit] Tomb Raider II
Lara Croft is the only returning character in Tomb Raider II and the following characters are introduced.
- Winston Smith: Lara's faithful butler, first appearing in Tomb Raider II. He appears in the mansion levels for Tomb Raider II, III, Legend and Anniversary as well as the FMV sequences from Tomb Raider Chronicles. His surname is first mentioned in Legend. According to his biography in Legend, his family served the Croft family for generations and he became a live-in servant after his wife passed away.
- Marco Bartoli: The leader of the Fiamma Nera cult and the main villain of Tomb Raider II. Bartoli seeks the Seraph - a key that will lead him into the catacombs of the Barkhang Monastery in Tibet where the key to the Dagger of Xian lies. Towards the end of the game in China, Bartoli plunges the dagger into his heart and becomes a dragon, whom Lara must fight in the penultimate level, The Dragon's Lair.
- Brother Chan Barkhang: For generations, the sacred order of the Barkhang monks have kept the secrets of the dagger confined within their Tibetan monastery. The tombs beneath this ancient structure hold a keystone called the Talion. Marco Bartoli has kidnapped Brother Chan Barkhang and sent his gang to Tibet in order to recover it. After telling Lara of the Talion, Brother Chan is shot to death by Bartoli. He appears in one of the Offshore Rig cutscenes in Tomb Raider II.
[edit] Tomb Raider III
Lara Croft and Winston return in Tomb Raider III and the following characters are introduced.
- Dr. Mark Willard: A seemingly friendly Scottish archaeological researcher. As the head of an excavation crew near the meteor crater of Antarctica, Dr. Willard has begun to show unusual interest in the continent's history, and its relation to four stones that were taken from there decades ago. After a coincidental meeting in India, Lara agrees to work for him. Later on in the game, his true intentions for the artefacts are revealed.
- Sophia Leigh: The main villain in the subplot connecting the London levels in Tomb Raider III, and the final boss in the game's expansion pack The Lost Artifact. Sophia has medium length blonde hair, wears a black business outfit and carries the "Eye of Isis" artifact on a gold septor. This highly successful but ruthless businesswoman stands at the head of a rather unsavoury cosmetics giant in London. Sophia is obsessed with everlasting beauty, and her company is rumoured to experiment with illegal substances. Either way, she is in possession of the Eye of Isis, a piece of the meteorite rock, and she is not ready to give it up easily. Despite her unusual character she is immortal to Lara's standard bullets, she can only die by being electrocuted by a power box near the top of the building. But Lara cannot collect the Eye of Isis because Sophia embedded it into her staff and she held it whilst dying thus putting Lara into a problem of getting around to turning the power off completely to collect it.
- Tony: Under orders of Dr. Willard, an exploration party was sent into the forests of India to recover the ancient Infada stone. Tony was on board of this mission until jungle fever got hold of him and he went insane. He has left his team members for dead and taken the Infada stone with him. Now Lara is forced to deal with this loose cannon before he causes more havoc. Tony is the main boss of the India based levels in Tomb Raider III.
- The Marines: A plane carrying these Australian soldiers has crashed into the mountains near Madubu Gorge. One of them was captured by the natives, and provides Lara with a map to traverse the nearby swamp. Others were scattered around the crash site of the plane, their commanders Lt. Tuckerman and Commander Bishop dead. They appear in the level Crash Site in Tomb Raider III. In the first movie, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Lara is helped by a number of soldiers that she seems to know quite well; this could be a possible reference to The Marines.
- The Tribesman: Lara encounters this cannibal in one of the temples after making her way through the Crash Site. He gives Lara information on why his tribe had abandoned their settlement many years ago at the meteorite crater in Antarctica and how they retained the artifact known as the Ora Dagger. Before Lara leaves, he warns her that his tribe will still attempt to kill her. The tribesman appears in a cutscene after the level Crash Site in Tomb Raider III.
- Puna: A man of which little is known, Puna is the high priest of a Polynesian tribe of cannibals near the South Pacific. He wields his tremendous magical powers through the Ora Dagger artefact. He is the boss for the South Pacific section of Tomb Raider III.
- Sophia's Hitman: A mercenary who tries to ambush Lara on the roof of St. Paul's Cathedral, but is disarmed by her. As Lara interrogates him, he tells her that he works as a hitman for a woman named Sophia Leigh, as did his father and grandfather. He regains his weapon, but is hit by a ringing bell and thrown off the roof of the cathedral before he has the chance to attack Lara a second time. He appears in the cutscene following the level Thames Wharf in Tomb Raider III.
- The Damned: In the abandoned tube station of Aldwych lives a fearsome gang of masked men. Their leader, a Geordie man named Bob, explains to Lara that they were ordinary men once, who worked for Sophia Leigh's company. However, they were subject to her horrific product tests. Disfigured, they were left for dead in the sewers. Now they live their lives in seclusion, choosing to hide their deformity from the world. They appear in the Aldwych and Lud's Gate levels in Tomb Raider III.
[edit] Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation
Lara Croft returns in The Last Revelation and the following characters are introduced.
- Werner Von Croy: A famous Austrian archaeologist and former mentor of Lara, their relationship has cooled since an incident during the expedition to Cambodia. Lara and Werner find themselves in conflict in Egypt. At the end of The Last Revelation, Lara saves his life at the apparent expense of her own. Tomb Raider Chronicles delves deeper into the reasons of their animosity, which involves the quest for an artifact called "The Iris." His death plays an important role in the events of Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness.
- Jean-Yves: An archaeologist and friend of Lara, whose thorough knowledge of Ancient Egypt is of great help to her.
- The Guide: Hired by Lara to explore the tomb of Seth with her. He soon reveals his true colours.
- Semerkhet: A high priest of the Egyptian sun god Horus. He helped Horus in imprisoning the god of evil, Set (or "Seth" with a silent "H"), and leaves many warnings behind in manuscripts on those who may inadvertently free him, as what to do if to stop him if it were to happen. Semerkhet appears through various FMV sequnces throughout Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation as well as provide voice-overs for some of the cutscenes.
- Ahmed: Hired by Lara as a guide to explore the tomb of Seth with her, he soon reveals his true colours as he tries to steal the Amulet of Horus from her. After a high speed chase through the Egyptian desert, it is revealed he is employed by Werner Von Croy, Lara's one-time mentor and rival archaeologist. After escaping the tomb of Semerkhet in Karnak, Lara sneaks up on him and demands to know where Von Croy is headed. He points her to Alexandria as Lara knocks him out and steals his clothes. As Lara sneaks onboard a train, Ahmed is killed by a spiritual guardian in Semerkhet's tomb. Ahmed appears in Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation - first as an NPC in the level Tomb of Seth and later in several FMV sequences.
- Sergeant Azizus: Although badly wounded, he shows Lara how to deal with the hideous creature guarding the entrance to the Citadel. He appears in several cutscenes in Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation for the Cairo levels.
- Set (also spelled Seth): The Egyptian God of Chaos and Destruction, who is inadvertently released by Lara. He incarnates himself as Werner Von Croy in order to prevent Lara from invoking his enemy, Horus.
- Horus: The Egyptian God of the Sky, who imprisoned Set and sealed his tomb. It is known that he will return, equipped with his armour and amulet to imprison Set once more for all eternity.

When he first discovers Lara on board the submarine, he has her locked inside the sleeping quarters being used as a cell block. Later, Lara finds him wounded in the submarine's control room after the impact of Mikhailov's death severely cripped the sub. He helps her activate the escape pod so she can escape, but chooses to remain behind as the submarine crashes into the sea bed. Yarofev appears in the Russia chapter of Tomb Raider Chronicles.

He was promised the gift of eternal life, concealed within an ancient scroll by the dullard Abbot and his cohorts, but was tricked and remains trapped within a barn surrounded by flowing water. He kidnaps Dunstan in order for Lara to shut off the running water at an old mill. Kaleta appears in the final Ireland level in Tomb Raider Chronicles.
- Elderly Man: As Lara makes her escape with the Iris artifact from the VCI Headquarters in New York, the entire facility is placed on red alert. As she does so, Lara uses the artifact to rewind time and save Alex. Despite trying to get Lara to escape the collapsing tomb with him, Lara remains behind to finish Powell while he escapes. He was forced to work with Lara as they searched for the second piece of the triangle. The novelisation provides a lot more information regarding his history than the film does. He was born in Dorset and was schooled at Oxford. He became a barrister at the age of 23 and Queen's Counsel at the unheard-of age of 36. His current occupation is counsel for several banking firms and is a member of the board and ranking stockholder in a number of important multinational corporations. He has houses in London, Venice, and Washington D.C., as well as an apartment in New York. He fell in love with Venice when he travelled there as a young, impressionable lawyer. Considering this is where the Illuminati has its headquarters this could be when he was recruited. Now, he has a lot of legitimate business interests in Venice. He banks with several Swiss banks. He considers fear, far and away, to be the best motivator. He detests people that whine or have noble causes such as environmentalists. He is an expert in several unarmed combat forms. In China once, he fought with two of the world's foremost blackbelts at the same time and beat them easily. One ended up with a broken spine and now has to eat through a straw and crap into a bag. However, during the final scene of the film, Lara and Powell fought each other in a brutal fight and Lara killed him by snapping his neck.
- Distinguished Gentleman: The leader of the Illuminati. He hires Powell to retrieve the Triangle of Light and travels with the research team to Siberia, but is killed by Powell. He appears in the first film and is played by Richard Johnson.

He later helps her break into Jonathon Reiss' lab in Shanghai. At the end of the film, Terry helps Lara defeat Reiss, but his greed got the better of him as he attempts to take Pandora's box as a prize for helping Lara find it. This results in Lara being forced to kill him. Terry appears in the second film and is played by Gerard Butler.
- Dr. Jonathon Reiss: A Nobel Prize winning scientist searching for Pandora's Box. He kidnaps Hillary and Bryce in order to get Lara's cooperation in Africa. He is the main villain of the second film and played by Ciarán Hinds.
- Chen Lo: A Chinese crimelord, Chen Lo was responsible for the theft of a luminous orb from the submerged Luna Temple. Lara tracks him down in China with Terry Sheridan and kills him after learning of Dr. Reiss. He appears in the second film and is played by Simon Yam.
