Tomah is a city in Monroe County, Wisconsin, United States. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population 8,419. The city is located partially within the Town of Tomah.

Tomah is located at 43°59′6″N, 90°30′14″W (43.985089, -90.503922)[1].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.7 square miles (20.0 km²), of which, 7.3 square miles (19.0 km²) of it is land and 0.4 square miles (1.0 km²) of it (5.05%) is water.

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 8,419 people, 3,451 households, and 2,098 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,148.2 people per square mile (443.5/km²). There were 3,706 housing units at an average density of 505.4/sq mi (195.2/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 94.95% White, 1.03% Black or African American, 1.65% Native American, 0.67% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 0.46% from other races, and 1.15% from two or more races. 1.41% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 3,451 households out of which 31.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.2% were married couples living together, 11.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.2% were non-families. 33.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.31 and the average family size was 2.96.

In the city the population was spread out with 25.8% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 26.5% from 25 to 44, 22.0% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 97.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $31,986, and the median income for a family was $42,881. Males had a median income of $31,612 versus $21,377 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,409. About 8.4% of families and 12.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 18.7% of those under age 18 and 6.3% of those age 65 or over.

The Tomah Area School District contains 9 public schools, of which there are 7 elementary schools, 1 middle school, and 1 high school. There are also a few alternative schools in the area.

Three health care facilities are located in Tomah: one hospital, Tomah Memorial Hospital, and two clinics, Lake Tomah Clinic of Franciscan Skemp Mayo Health System, and the Tomah Clinic of Gundersen Lutheran. Tomah is also home to Veteran's Administration Medical Center.
