Tom Stephenson

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tom Criddle Stephenson (1893-1987) was a British journalist and a leading champion of walkers' rights in the countryside. He was for many years (from 1948 on) the Secretary of the Ramblers' Association. He is credited with having inspired the creation of the Pennine Way, the first of the UK's long-distance footpaths, through an article he wrote for the Daily Herald in 1935[1][2], and his subsequent lobbying work with MPs as RA Secretary. He wrote the official guidebook for the Way, published shortly after it was finally officially opened on 24 April 1965 (when Stephenson was then 72).
