Tom McBroom

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thomas McBroom, (born September 17, 1952) is an award-winning Canadian golf course architect. His work, while heavily centred in Canada, has grown to include golf courses in Europe and The Caribbean. He is the principal and founder of Thomas McBroom Associates Ltd., a Toronto-based landscape architecture firm specializing in golf course design. McBroom holds a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (BLA) from the University of Guelph.

McBroom is frequently cited as Canada's premier golf architect. Twelve McBroom designs are listed in SCOREGolf magazine's 2006 ranking of Canada's top 100 courses - more than any other living architect. McBroom is an outspoken critic of the Royal Canadian Golf Association's handling of the Canadian Open. He has also condemned Augusta National Golf Club's - site of The Masters Tournament - repeated efforts to lengthen the golf course arguing that extra yardage compromises both strategic shot making and overall tournament excitement.

A McBroom "signature" design is characterized by great beauty, craftsmanship and harmonious integration with the landscape that it occupies. The architect is often sought for the exceptional quality and reputation that is directly associated with his name. His clients include, but are not limited to, hotel and resort operators, real estate developers, government tourism agencies, private equity groups and high net-worth individuals. As of early 2007, McBroom has completed over 40 original course designs and led numerous course renovations of varying scale. He is currently working on projects in Western Canada, Ontario, The Maritimes, Scandinavia and Southern Europe.

McBroom lives in Toronto, Canada. He is married and has two children.
