[edit] Character Plot
[edit] Zzyzx
Tom Foss worked for Zzyzx since May 27, 1996. Within Zzyzx he was assigned to Subject 781227. Unknown to the workers at Zzyzx, he was actually working for Adam Baylin, Zzyzx's previous CEO. Part of his job was to train Cyrus Reynolds, who went on to become the head of security for Zzyzx.
In 2001, a drunk Foss accidentally killed his wife and daughter in a car crash.
[edit] The Man in the Pick-Up Truck
While Foss was eliminating any evidence against himself in regards to Project 781227, Kyle had awoken and wandered into the city where he was arrested. Foss obtained information that Kyle had been transferred into the care of a psychologist, Nicole Trager and her family. Because of this, Foss decided to keep an eye on Kyle. It is revealed soon that Foss had set been listening into conversations in the Trager household and has been speaking on the telephone to Baylin who was in charge of his plans. Presumably, with orders from Baylin, Foss resigned from Zzyzx, however during the resignation, Dennis Bunker found out that the key card Foss turned in was not his own and was Professor Kern's. Bunker arrives at Foss' apartment and finds out about Kyle. Foss, pretending to be making a deal with him draws him back to his apartment where he snaps his neck.
Shortly before the school year began for Kyle and the Tragers, Foss took a job as a neighborhood watchman at a private security firm. The day school began, Foss broke into the Trager household and set up cameras to track them. That day, Foss drew immediate suspicion from the Tragers when he arrived just in time to stop a "break in" (which was actually his own break out). Days later, during a rain storm, Stephen informs Foss that Kyle had drawn a picture of a man looking at him through a window. There happened to also be blood on Kyle's window. When Foss asks to see the picture, it turns out to be Kern. Foss, using his surveillance cameras discovers that the blood came from Kyle's friend Declan who was involved in a hit-and-run and sneaked into the house that night. Foss informs the Tragers of this.
Soon later, Foss realizes that the police will start making connections leading to him and decides to stop it. Foss goes into a bad neighborhood and finds a junkie who he picks up. Foss presumably kills the junkie and plants the gun used to kill Kern on him. The police buy this story.
[edit] The Guardian
A few weeks later, Foss is transferred from his security detail after Stephen calls the security company to get him changed. That day, Foss goes to the Tragers' house to ask Nicole about it. He also learns from surveillance that Kyle, Lori and Declan are going to the University of Washington, where Professor Kern taught. Later, he realizes that they have found a location from a paper leading them to an undisclosed location that Foss knows very well-the headquarters for Zzyzx. As Kyle begins to climb a fence, Foss pulls him down and tells him to stop asking questions or else the Tragers will get hurt.
Days later, as Foss is returning to his apartment, Cyrus Reynolds appears in a car. Foss climbs into the car and with his gun poised, tells him not to hurt Kyle and that he's gone so far away he'll never be found. Unfortunately, just then Kyle and Declan show up at Foss' apartment. While Foss briefly goes out to buy fast food and returns to find that his surveillance cameras had been turned on. Foss runs to the window to find it open and sees Kyle and Declan running away. Foss hurries out of his apartment to find Kyle and Declan's car pulling away with Reynolds' car right behind. That night, Foss shows up at the Beachwood Carnival where he finds Reynolds who hits him over the head briefly knocking him out. As he gets up, he sees Kyle having a seizure on the carousel. However, Foss' plan has not been finished. It is revealed that Foss and Baylin paid off a couple, David and Julie Peterson, to pretend to be Kyle's real family and take him away. The following day, as Kyle is walking home from a church, he is tracked by Reynolds but Foss knocks him out with chloroform. Foss returns him to the forest where he was first found. Kyle finally remembers an argument between Foss and Kern as Kern prepares to shoot Kyle. As they talk in the forest, they begin to be shot at by Reynolds. As they run, Foss is shot in the arm making Kyle drive the car away. He pulls the car out of Reynolds' shooting range and begins to question Foss. He asks why he didn't remember anything before the night in the woods with Kern and Foss tells him that it's because there's nothing to remember. He also tells Kyle to pretend to remember the Petersons and that way he will take the Tragers out of danger.
[edit] The Death of Adam Baylin
Foss is revisited at the Baylin mansion where Kyle had been taken by the Petersons. Baylin reveals to Kyle what Foss' real job is, security for him. Foss keeps Kyle on a tight timer while he briefly speaks to the Tragers via webcam. If his messages are over two minutes, Zzyzx could track the call to the mansion. As Baylin attempts to teach Kyle more things, a shot is fired from the forest that hits Baylin's heart and kills him. After Baylin's funeral, Foss wishes to go after Zzyzx but is commanded not to do so by Kyle. However, Foss disobeys orders. One night, Foss sneaks into Zzyzx headquarters and plants a time bomb. While Foss waits, he sees project 781228. In 781228's room, he sees surveillance of Kyle walking the hallways. Foss knocks Kyle out just as he approaches 781228's room and takes him outside the headquarters. Kyle awakens seconds before Zzyzx blows up. He scolds Foss for doing so, but Foss still claims his actions were for good. Kyle realizes that he no longer wishes to stay at the Baylin mansion and asks Foss to return him to the Tragers. Foss obeys both Adam and Kyle's wishes. Kyle returns to the Trager household, but Foss refuses to let Kyle give up on Adam's dreams for him. Foss begins to train Kyle to use his powers by using the notes left in Baylin's death. Kyle gains insight from a disc that Baylin left behind that reads "DON'T TRUST FOSS". A panicked Kyle runs to the warehouse Foss lived in only to find Foss and any trace of him was gone.
[edit] Mada Corporation
While under Baylin's orders, Foss uses a stolen key fob to recover all of the files on 781227 from the Mada Corporation website, including a picture of Kyle in his tube, with Foss in the glass' reflection. He then deletes the data from the website, knowing that they will eventually realize it was him and come after him. Foss resolves to protect Kyle, "even if it costs him his life." [1]
Upon a return trip to Zzyzx, Kyle discovers that it was Foss who cared for him, playing music for Kyle while he was in the tube and that it was Foss who saved Kyle from the clutches of Zzyzx. Once Kyle searches his feeling he concludes that someone must have tampered with the disc consequentially discovering that the only one that could have tampered with the disc was Brian Taylor. After discovering that Foss left to care for the still-alive Adam Baylin, Kyle discovers what he believes to be his missing Latnok ring in Ballantine's hands. Against Foss reservations, he remains loyal to Kyle and assists him in retrieving the Latnok ring. When Declan hurts his ankle, Foss sacrifices himself to allow Kyle and Declan to escape.
In order to extract information from Foss and interrogate him, Ballantine has Foss inserted in the C.I.R. chair. Being faced with memories of his wife and child Foss begins to break down. Taylor mocks Foss, exclaiming how the great Tom Foss was done in by a couple of memories. When Kyle and Stephen finally bring down Mada Corp. with Jessi's help, Foss is freed. He decides to leave all Baylin's material with Kyle and charges the Tragers with Kyle's preparation. When Kyle once again thanks Tom for his help, Kyle promises to be "worth it" for Foss. Foss explains, "You already are." [2]
[edit] Foss' Return
Kyle calls in Foss to take care of Brian Taylor once and for all. Foss gives Taylor a one-way plane ticket, telling Taylor, "You don't want to come back." [3] On the day of prom, Foss stays in the shadows once more, trailing Kyle and watching over him again. Though Baylin told Latnok to back off and let both himself and Kyle to have some time to live, Foss questions Latnok's intentions just as Sarah did. When Kyle asks Foss if he should be worried, Foss responds, "You should always be worried." [4] At the end of the dance when Kyle leaves Amanda to retrieve a personal effect, Kyle emerges from the gym to find Amanda gone with a Latnok ring left in her place.
