[edit] Fictional character history

Former football star, Tom Cudahy, comes to Pine Valley a hero. He thwarts a kidnap attempt on Charlie Brent, and immediately wins the trust of those around him. Upon opening his restaurant, the Goal Post, Tom experiences great success. With that, Erica Kane notices the young Adonis, and pursues him romantically.

Tom hires Erica as his hostess at the Goalpost. She is just coming off a relationship with Nick Davis. What Tom sees as love, Erica sees as a game to win Nick back. She stages a kidnapping that goes awry when she catches viral pneumonia. She calls out to Nick and not Tom. Tom turns to Brooke English for comfort. But Erica is determined as ever to win Tom back. Brooke’s interest wanes, and Erica marries Tom. Tom feels safe about his marriage as Nick leaves town.

Tom then marries Brooke (Erica's archenemy) and they have a beautiful daughter, Laura. A pregnant Brooke divorces Tom when he has an affair with former wife, Erica, on the night before Erica's marriage to Adam Chandler. Tom's next wife is Skye Chandler. (Tom is noticed to have real problems with women). Skye causes the vigilante burning of Cindy Parker's home, then rescues Cindy from the flames, goes into a coma, and awakes to find her husband, Tom, now in love with Barbara Montgomery, to whom Tom has turned to for comfort during Skye's coma. After Skye is taken to Oakhaven Sanitarium (a mental hospital), Tom thinks that he and Barbara will be happy together. No luck. While babysitting Laura, Tom's daughter, Barbara lets her cross the street unattended and she is killed by a drunk driver. By then, Tom is a raging alcoholic. Tom and Barbara stay married (he pretends to be the father to her daughter, Molly -- really Travis' child). Molly develops leukemia, then Barbara and Travis conceive a second child to harvest the infant's bone marrow. Tom falls off the wagon and divorces his wife.

Next, Tom meets Livia, the sister of Derek Frye, who works out in his health club (he gave up the bar/restaurant when he realized he was an alcoholic) and they fall in love. They marry -- one of the first interracial marriages on daytime television. They adopt a son, Jamal Woods. Later, Alec McIntyre discovers that Jamal is his son from a relationship he had when he was younger. Alec sues for custody of Jamal, but Jamal ends up staying with his adoptive parents. Tom, Livia and Jamal eventually move away from Pine Valley. Tom occasionally "pops up" now and then -- mostly during crises.
