[edit] History

Tom Bean was founded in 1887 and named after Thomas Bean, a land surveyor from Bonham, Texas who donated the land to be used as a stop on the local railway. It later became a stop on the St. Louis Southwestern Railway.

In the late 19th/early 20th century, Tom Bean was bustling with two saloons, a movie theater, a social club, a cotton gin and factories. However, growth soon ended, and eventually the railroad removed the tracks through the city.

Current growth is due to its proximity to nearby Sherman, approximately twelve miles northwest.

[edit] People, Places & Culture

One bustling spot near the small downtown is the KC grocery store. Opened around 1989/1990, this was the first and only building in Tom Bean to have automatic doors. There is an elementary school, middle school, and high school which serve not only Tom Bean but many of the smaller surrounding communities such as Luella and Ida. There are three churches - Tom Bean First Baptist, Tom Bean Church of Christ and Tom Bean Methodist. Tom Bean also has a post office and two banks. A gas station/convenience store opened as Chappy's in the late 1990s, but closed down and reopened as Lone Star. There is also a small restaurant called Pappiano's adjacent to KC food store. Country Home Realty serves the area's real estate needs and is located behind the post office, along with Gregg & Company Certified Public Accountants.

Natives of Tom Bean are sometimes referred to as "Beaners." The Tom Bean mascot is the Tomcat. Although various cats are common as mascots, Tom Bean is the only city in Texas to have the Tomcat. Annual events include the Beanstock Festival, Chiggerfest, and the Tom Bean Founders Day. A local landmark is the Tom Bean watertower, which has the graffiti "Seniors '86" written prominently on it. For a little while, one of the two local churches erected signs along the highway which read as a welcome and with the note that they are praying for passersby as they pass through. This project was abandoned within a year or two.

For many years, the center of social life for the old-timers was the Tom Bean domino club. This club was located in the old city jail until it was damaged in the great City Hall fire of 2002. Also downtown is the well-known Bub's Barber Shop.

"Three Bean Salad"

Tom Bean is also known for being the town that births people who have tons of potential to make it in life but just can't because they are not near anything, no big cities, and no real room for growth. Thus, many students resign themselves to quitting school, turning to drugs, or simply working at KC's for the rest of their lives upon graduation.
