"He rushed out the door, but that part of the building collapsed, killing him."

Toma Caragiu wasn't in the apartment. He had guests, and seconds before the earthquake they were leaving. He was accompanying them when the earthquake begun. The facade of the building collapsed catching them in the street. His apartment was left largely intact (except the facade wall missing).
