Talk:Tom O'Neil
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Goldderby was not the first site dedicated to discussing and/or predicting major awards. The Oscar Guy (and its spinoff, The Unofficial Academy Awards Discussion Board) predates Goldderby by at least two years; OscarWatch was also started in 1999, before Goldderby ever rose to prominence, which was during the 2000 Oscar season.

[edit] Current wording of text line is correct
The contested line states that GoldDerby.com was "the first website devoted to predicting all major show awards -- Oscars, Emmys, Grammys, Golden Globes and Tonys." The other Oscar sites mentioned do not predict Emmys, Grammys, Globes and Tonys. Furthermore, when GoldDerby rose to prominence is not the issue. When it was launched IS the issue and the proprietors of both sites, GoldDerby and Oscarwatch, have publicly acknowledged that they are not sure which site came before the other. Regardless, Oscarwatch doesn't predict Tonys, Emmys, Grammys, etc., so this point is not relevent.
O'Neil is an awards expert widely acknowledged by the scores of publications he's written for, including LA Times, NY Times, London Times, NY Daily News, Washington Post, Variety, Billboard, Reader's Digest, TV Guide, USA Weekend, etc. Some editions of his books were co-published by Variety with forewards by Variety editor-in-chief Peter Bart, who writes, "Thomas O'Neil is an aficionado of award shows and a scholar of showbiz." (Quote from year 2000 edition of "The Emmys, copublished by Variety/Perigee.) O'Neil has been frequently quoted by the Associated Press, Reuters, USA Today and other major media for more than 15 years. He's been the awards expert for E! Entertainment Network and TV Guide Channel where he's teamed up with Joan and Melissa Rivers for more than a dozen years of red-carpet shows. He also regularly participates in the awards coverage of CNN, MSNBC and other major TV media.
[edit] 2007 "Coming Out"
I won't cite it as dubious, but I am unsure as to why the article mentions Mr. O'Neil coming out in 2007. As far as I can remember (back in the days long before Goldderby became part of the LA Times), Mr. O'Neil never hid the fact that he was gay.

[edit] Where? Please?
I do wonder where he's from; something about his accent slightly reminds me of someone that I know from Louisiana.
I have looked.
